Tennessee’s fast start has them climbing the national conversation, and the latest ESPN Allstate Playoff Predictor reflects that momentum.
After beating Georgia Tech and Furman to open the season 2-0, the Volunteers have kept moving up in the rankings. They’re 15th in the AP poll and 14th in the coaches poll, where they jumped ahead of Penn State.
The polls matter for perception, but the real measuring stick is the College Football Playoff Committee, and those rankings are still weeks away. Until then, ESPN’s predictor offers a useful snapshot of where Tennessee stands in the playoff race, and the news is encouraging for Vols fans.
The predictor gives Tennessee a 27% chance to make the final field, which is the 14th-best percentage in the country. The Vols are not currently projected into the playoff bracket, but they are in the mix.
That also lines up with the coaches poll, suggesting Tennessee is being viewed in a fair spot for now. And with plenty of season left, the Vols have room to keep improving their outlook.
Inside the SEC, Tennessee is sixth in the predictor’s pecking order. Ahead of the Vols are Texas A&M and LSU at 50%, Alabama at 55%, Georgia at 68%, and Texas at 87%.
Even with five teams sitting ahead of them, Tennessee still controls its own path. The Vols are scheduled to face three of those teams later in the year, giving them chances to change the picture if they keep trending upward.
