Tennessee football’s loss at South Carolina did damage, but it didn’t end the Vols’ playoff discussion.
With four games left, Tennessee still has a path to the College Football Playoff if it can win out, and that picture is getting a little easier to follow thanks to a tracker posted by The Fourth Quarter on X. The graph breaks the race into tiers: clinched, safe, thin margin, run the table, and then all the way to eliminated.
Right now, no team has checked the clinched or safe boxes. The chaos in the SEC and Big Ten has kept things messy, and only eight teams sit in the thin margin tier, which is reserved for teams that should still be in line for an at-large bid even if they take one more loss.
Tennessee is in the run the table group, which is exactly what it sounds like. The Vols already have two losses, so the path forward points to one thing: win the last four and leave no doubt.
That run starts after a bye week, with Kentucky coming to Knoxville next Saturday. The Wildcats have only one loss and are in the thin margin tier, so that matchup has real weight.
After that, Tennessee heads on the road to face Texas A&M. The Aggies are already in the eliminated category, with losses piling up as they stagger toward the finish.
Then comes LSU at home. The Tigers also have two losses and will need to keep winning to stay alive. If both teams take care of business before that meeting, it could become the kind of game that feels like a playoff elimination round.
Tennessee closes with a road trip to Vanderbilt, and the Commodores are in the eliminated tier after a sharp drop from last season.
