Tennessee's JP Estrella Faces Uncertain Fate Against Vanderbilt

Tennessee's upcoming clash with Vanderbilt remains uncertain as power forward JP Estrella's injury status looms over a crucial SEC showdown.

As we gear up for the Tennessee-Vanderbilt showdown, the Vols are facing a key uncertainty with their starting power forward, JP Estrella. His left foot injury has him listed as a game-time decision, leaving fans on edge as they await updates. Coach Rick Barnes has hinted that even if Estrella suits up, his minutes may be limited.

Estrella, who missed the Oklahoma game, had been on a roll with a standout performance against LSU, scoring 16 points and grabbing nine rebounds. The foot injury is worrisome, especially considering his history of foot surgery that sidelined him for most of the 2024-25 season.

Thankfully, recent x-rays have shown no fractures, but the soreness remains a concern. Barnes mentioned that while the surgery area isn’t problematic, managing the soreness is crucial.

During Friday’s practice, Estrella participated partially, receiving treatment but also getting some five-on-five action. This season, the 6-foot-11 forward has been a rising star, averaging 9.7 points and 5.2 rebounds. Since being promoted to the starting lineup, his numbers have jumped to 11.7 points and seven rebounds per game.

If Estrella can't play, Tennessee might rely on former Vanderbilt player Jaylen Carey and freshman DeWayne Brown to step up. This SEC rivalry is more than just a game; it’s pivotal for tournament seeding.

Tennessee stands at 9-4 in SEC play, with Vanderbilt close behind at 8-5. Both teams are vying for a top-four finish to secure a double-bye in the SEC Tournament.

On the other side, Vanderbilt is breathing a sigh of relief as star guard Tyler Tanner and Duke Miles are cleared to play. Miles returns after missing six games with a knee issue, adding depth to the Commodores’ lineup.

Vanderbilt is slightly favored, with odds set at 2.5 points over Tennessee, and the over/under is pegged at 148.5. The action tips off at 2 p.m.

ET at Memorial Gymnasium, with ESPN's Dave O’Brien, Cory Alexander, and Dick Vitale calling the game. This matchup promises to be a thrilling chapter in the storied rivalry.
