Tennessee will head to Atlanta with a familiar face once again serving as the centerpiece of its game-day leadership group.
Josh Heupel announced that linebackers Arion Carter and Jeremiah Telander, tight end Ethan Davis and long snapper Bennett Brady will be the Vols’ captains for Saturday’s road matchup at Georgia Tech. Tennessee names captains on a game-by-game basis, so the group can shift from week to week, with the staff typically making sure all three phases are represented.
Carter is the headliner for the second straight week. He was the lone captain for the opener against Furman, even though he could not play because of a one-game NCAA suspension tied to a paid-for flight during his pre-draft process, when he still believed he was headed to the NFL. After deciding to return to school, he repaid the flight, but the NCAA still issued the punishment.
“He’s the strongest leader in our locker room,” Heupel said Monday. “He represents Tennessee in the exact way that I and our administration, our staff would want somebody to represent Tennessee. It’s a no-brainer on Saturday to have him be the guy out there.”
Telander joins him after drawing strong praise throughout the offseason, with coaches calling him both ‘Mr. Tennessee’ and the ‘heart and soul of the defense’ this summer. Against Furman, he worked as both a traditional linebacker and edge rusher and finished with five total tackles, two solo tackles and a pass deflected.
Davis comes in after opening the year with the first touchdown of Tennessee’s season and the first of freshman quarterback Faizon Brandon’s career. He was limited by a lower-body injury, but still made his mark with a 17-yard touchdown catch on the opening drive.
Brady rounds out the group. The long snapper was a frequent captain choice for Tennessee a year ago, too, and he’s now in his fifth season with the program and second as the full-time snapper.
For the Vols, the captain list for the first two games now looks like this: Arion Carter in both weeks, then Telander, Davis and Brady added for the trip to Georgia Tech.

Faizon Brandon Passed Tennessees First Road Test Now Comes The Real Challenge
Freshman quarterback Faizon Brandon handled his first road start with the kind of calm Tennessee could reasonably ask for, helping the Volunteers leave Georgia Tech with a 45-24 victory. Brandon completed 10 of 21 passes for 148 yards and two touchdowns, added 22 rushing yards and, most importantly for a young quarterback in a tough setting, kept the game under control without turning the ball over.
Now the test gets more interesting. Brandon has already shown he can navigate a hostile environment and make enough plays to back up the rest of Tennessee's talent, but the next stretch will ask for more than poise and caution. Tennessees First Road Win Still Left Vols Fans With One Concern
Tennessee left Bobby Dodd Stadium with its first road win of the season and a 45-24 result that gave the Vols a 2-0 start, but the box score still told a story of a team easing into its identity. Freshman quarterback Faizon Brandon helped settle things early enough, and Tennessee spent much of the middle stretch of the game in control while both sides of the ball found a groove away from home.
Even so, the finish left a familiar unease for fans who watched Georgia Tech keep pressing late. Tennessee backed off into a more conservative approach as the Yellow Jackets tried to chip away at the margin, and for a moment it felt like the game might get tighter than it had any business being.
