Tennessees Final Tuneup Just Got A More Intriguing Quarterback Twist

Despite a history intertwined with Tennessee, Rickie Collins leads Kennesaw State as they prepare to challenge the Vols under Neyland's spotlight.

Tennessee’s final non-conference game of the 2026 regular season now has a quarterback face with at least some built-in familiarity.

Kennesaw State announced Wednesday that transfer Rickie Collins will open as the Owls’ starter when they begin the season against West Georgia on Sept. 3, setting him up to face the Vols on Sept. 19 in Neyland Stadium. Collins arrives from Syracuse, where he was on the roster for Tennessee’s season-opening game in 2025.

That matchup went Tennessee’s way in a 45-26 win, with Joey Aguilar leading the offense in his first game. Collins did not play for the Orange that day because he was sitting behind Steve Angeli on the depth chart. Even so, he had already seen Tennessee up close while helping prepare for that game.

The Vols, though, are a very different team now. Tennessee moved on from defensive coordinator Tim Banks after the season and brought in Jim Knowles, while also overhauling plenty of personnel through the transfer portal. Whatever edge Collins might have had from last year’s prep work figures to be limited.

Collins eventually became Syracuse’s starter anyway. When Angeli suffered a season-ending injury, Collins took over and started the final five games of the season.

He finished with 1,042 passing yards, six touchdowns and 10 interceptions, while adding 126 rushing yards and a score. Syracuse lost all five of those starts.

Before Syracuse, Collins spent two seasons at LSU, where he was a reserve. From 2023-24, he completed all seven of his pass attempts for 38 yards, with no touchdowns and no interceptions.

Kennesaw State’s coaching staff already carries plenty of Tennessee ties, too. Head coach Jerry Mack once served as Josh Heupel’s running backs coach, and offensive coordinator Mitch Militello also worked under Heupel.

Tennessee and Kennesaw State are set for a 7:45 p.m. ET kickoff on Sept. 19, with the game airing on SEC Network.

Jaxson Mois Tennessee Return Suddenly Feels More Real Than Expected

Jaxson Mois path back to Tennessee has taken an unexpected turn after the defensive lineman went undrafted and signed with the Los Angeles Rams as a UDFA. If he is released by the Rams, the possibility of a fifth college season suddenly becomes real, giving the Volunteers a chance to regain a familiar piece of their defensive front far sooner than most would have expected.

A recent restraining order involving 16 football players, including some who were already in NFL training camps, opened the door for those athletes to return to college sports this season. For Tennessee, the lingering question is whether Moi would want to come back and whether there would be room for him if he does, leaving the situation one to watch as his pro opportunity unfolds. Vols Just Unveiled A Smokey Grey Look With Real Meaning

Tennessees uniform reveal for the 2026 season comes with more than a fresh look, as the Vols are adding a Neyland Legacy set that reaches back into the programs history. The new adidas designs honor former head coach Robert Neyland with details tied to his military background and to the stadium that bears his name, including a leather-style helmet without the Power T that gives the throwback concept a distinctive edge.

The Vols are scheduled to break out the uniforms in a home game against Auburn on Oct. 3, giving fans an early chance to see how the new look plays under the lights in Knoxville. It is the kind of rollout Tennessee can use to connect the present to one of the most important figures in program history, while also adding a fresh wrinkle to a season that will already have plenty of attention on it. Lady Vols Jersey Reveal Raised One Pat Summitt Question

Tennessees return to Adidas uniforms this fall comes with a first-of-its-kind wrinkle for Lady Vols basketball, as the program will also carry a sponsored jersey patch from Knoxville-based Axle Logistics. The deal, which runs through the 2030-31 season and is valued at more than $3 million annually, links the program with a company founded by Tennessee alumni and gives the school a new revenue stream while keeping the uniform look tied to a homegrown partner.

The jersey reveal also prompted a familiar question for longtime followers of the program, since the Pat Summitt Foundation has long had a visible place on Lady Vols gear. Early mock-ups created some uncertainty on that front, but the expectation around the program is that Summitts presence will remain part of the uniforms even as the new sponsorship era begins. For a team whose identity is so closely tied to its past, that detail matters almost as much as the new commercial one. [Read more 🡒]
