Tennessee’s lone 2028 commitment is surging in the rankings, and Kaden Craft’s rise has been hard to miss.
The Lake Norman High School quarterback, who pledged to the Vols on Aug. 17, has climbed from No. 132 nationally in Rivals’ initial view to No. 34 overall in the latest Rivals300 update. That jump made him the third-biggest riser in the cycle on Tuesday.
Rivals now lists Craft as a four-star prospect, the No. 4 quarterback in the class, and the No. 4 player in North Carolina. The 6-foot-4 passer from Mooresville has quickly become one of the most talked-about quarterbacks in the cycle.
Craft’s fit with Tennessee was clear from the start, and Rivals’ Steve Wiltfong said after the commitment that he was Josh Heupel and Joey Halzle’s top quarterback target in the class. Tennessee made sure Craft knew exactly where he stood throughout the process.
“Started with the head coach,” Craft said about why he picked the Vols. “Every time I go up there, I have a great feeling.
It feels like home every time I’m there. The head coach playing quarterback and always being in the quarterback room meant a lot to me, just from a quarterback development standpoint.
Coach Halzle, everyone on the staff were great, made it feel like home. That’s really what it came down to.”
Wiltfong also described Craft’s relationship with Heupel and Halzle as “second to none.”
On the field, Craft has shown the kind of growth that explains the rankings climb. As a freshman in 2024, he threw for 1,171 yards with 13 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. As a sophomore, he took a clear step forward, finishing with 1,739 passing yards, 17 touchdowns, and only four interceptions.
This season, he’s been even sharper. Lake Norman is 5-0, and Craft has completed 977 passing yards with 19.5 yards per attempt, plus nine touchdown passes and no interceptions. He’s also added 199 rushing yards on 41 carries, which ranks second on the team.
Craft’s play helped fuel Lake Norman’s latest win, when he delivered two “absolutely perfect throws” in a road victory over Reagan on Friday. That performance, as noted in the report, officially signaled the Wildcats’ entry into the 7A state championship race.
Craft said he committed early because he was ready to make the call before his junior season and didn’t want to drag it out.
“I wanted to get it over with,” Craft said about his early commitment. “Part of it was because I wanted to get it over with before the season.
And then I felt like I was waiting to wait at that point. I’ve always felt strong about Tennessee, ever since the first time I stepped on campus.
I felt like it was home. I felt like I was just waiting to figure out some out.
But then I got a couple of calls. They kept recruiting me hard, and then eventually I just wanted to get it over with and get it done.”
For now, Tennessee has its quarterback of the future locked in - and Rivals’ latest update shows just how quickly Craft’s stock is rising.
