Tennessees Alabama Win Was Defined By Two Performances Fans Will Love

After a commanding win against Alabama, two Tennessee stars earn SEC accolades, showcasing exceptional defensive and special teams performances.

Tennessee’s win over Alabama on Saturday was defined by a defense that refused to budge and a kicker who kept cashing in points. That combination gave the Vols a 26-10 rivalry victory and earned a pair of SEC weekly awards.

Defensive end Tyree Weathersby led the way on the edge. He piled up two sacks for a loss of 17 yards, added 2.5 tackles for loss, finished with four total tackles and also recovered a fumble. That performance landed him the SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week honor.

Weathersby’s season production keeps climbing, too. He now has 6.5 sacks overall, including 5.5 against SEC opponents over the last four games. That total ranks second in the conference in SEC games.

Special teams also delivered for Tennessee through Cooper Ranvier. The kicker went a perfect 4-for-4 on field goals in the first half and added two extra points after the break, all while dealing with windy conditions. For that showing, he was named the SEC Special Teams Player of the Week.

“(Cooper Ranvier) did an unbelievable job,” Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel said after the game. “Probably as windy of a day as we’ve had inside that stadium since I’ve been here.

Put everything right through the uprights. And that was a huge part of the game early.

You kick field goals like that, typically, it comes back to bite you in the butt, though, too. And we were able to, in some ways, get away with that because of an elite defensive performance.”

Tennessee now turns the page to South Carolina, with a road trip set for Saturday. Kickoff is slated for 3:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.

Tennessees Alabama High Faces A Brutal Test At South Carolina

The bounce from Tennessees upset of then-No. 6 Alabama still matters, and it has pushed the Volunteers up to No. 11 in the latest AP Poll. But the reset comes quickly in Week 8, where a trip to South Carolina asks whether that statement win is the start of a surge or just one sharp night in a long SEC grind.

South Carolina has its own headliner waiting in quarterback LaNorris Sellers, a player already drawing attention as a potential 2027 NFL Draft pick and a central reason the Gamecocks are a dangerous matchup at home. The game figures to hinge on how Tennessee handles that challenge, and with the breakdown leaning toward South Carolina, the Vols are walking into one of those tests that can say a lot about how real their rise actually is. The win over Alabama did more than just energize Tennessees sideline and fan base. It also drew a fresh round of SEC recognition, with the league honoring a pair of Vols for the kind of performance that helped swing one of the conferences biggest games of the season.

Ty Weathersby and Cooper Ranvier were both singled out after the rivalry win, giving Tennessee a little more proof that its best players showed up when the stakes were highest. Tennessee Just Made Alabama's Misery Impossible To Ignore

Alabamas latest trip to Knoxville did more than add another loss to the ledger. It stirred up a familiar kind of frustration around the Crimson Tide, with callers on The Paul Finebaum Show sounding off in the aftermath and turning the spotlight squarely onto the state of the program.

The anger centered on the current coaching setup, with Kalen DeBoer, Ryan Grubb and Greg Byrne all drawing criticism from a fan base that is clearly running out of patience. With Tennessee now having won three straight over Alabama in Knoxville, the conversation around the rivalry has shifted from one bad night to a broader unease about where the Tide are headed.
