Tennessees Alabama Win Just Earned Even More SEC Respect

Deck: Exceptional plays by Weathersby and Ranvier secure top honors for Tennessee in a decisive win over Alabama.

Tennessee’s blowout of Alabama on Saturday was a team win, but the SEC handed out individual recognition on Monday to two Vols who helped set the tone early and often.

DL Ty Weathersby and K Cooper Ranvier were named players of the week at their respective positions after Tennessee’s 26-10 victory inside Neyland Stadium.

Weathersby took home lineman of the week honors after a disruptive day off the edge. He finished with four tackles, two sacks, and 2.5 tackles for loss.

One of his biggest moments came in the first quarter, when he recovered the fumble Keelon Russell lost after Jeremiah Telander -who also had a terrific game with two sacks and a fourth down stop - sacked Russell. Weathersby then rumbled 20 yards for what looked like a touchdown, but the play was called back because Weathersby’s knee was down.

Even so, the turnover still led to points.

Those points belonged to Ranvier, who was Tennessee’s entire scoring offense in the first half. He made all four of his field goal attempts and both extra points, accounting for every Tennessee point before halftime.

Ranvier connected from 29, 33, and 41 yards in the first quarter, then added a 34-yard field goal in the second. His 12 points from field goals outscored Alabama’s entire team on the day.

It was a strong showing from two players who clearly earned the league’s notice, even if Telander, Dejuan Lane, and DeSean Bishop also have a case for recognition at their own positions.

Tennessees Alabama High Faces A Brutal Test At South Carolina

The bounce from Tennessees upset of then-No. 6 Alabama still matters, and it has pushed the Volunteers up to No. 11 in the latest AP Poll. But the reset comes quickly in Week 8, where a trip to South Carolina asks whether that statement win is the start of a surge or just one sharp night in a long SEC grind.

South Carolina has its own headliner waiting in quarterback LaNorris Sellers, a player already drawing attention as a potential 2027 NFL Draft pick and a central reason the Gamecocks are a dangerous matchup at home. The game figures to hinge on how Tennessee handles that challenge, and with the breakdown leaning toward South Carolina, the Vols are walking into one of those tests that can say a lot about how real their rise actually is. Tennessee Just Made Alabama's Misery Impossible To Ignore

Alabamas latest trip to Knoxville did more than add another loss to the ledger. It stirred up a familiar kind of frustration around the Crimson Tide, with callers on The Paul Finebaum Show sounding off in the aftermath and turning the spotlight squarely onto the state of the program.

The anger centered on the current coaching setup, with Kalen DeBoer, Ryan Grubb and Greg Byrne all drawing criticism from a fan base that is clearly running out of patience. With Tennessee now having won three straight over Alabama in Knoxville, the conversation around the rivalry has shifted from one bad night to a broader unease about where the Tide are headed. Alabamas Loss In Knoxville Just Led To Another Rivalry Consequence

The aftermath of Tennessees win over Alabama did not stop at the final whistle in Knoxville. The SEC has now handed the Vols a $500,000 fine after fans stormed the field, part of a new conference policy put in place before the 2025 season to make the punishment immediate and uniform instead of using the old tiered system.

Kentucky learned the same lesson earlier this season after its own field-storming episode, and Tennessees case fits squarely into that broader crackdown. Under SEC guidelines, the money does not stay in league coffers, which only adds another layer to a rivalry result that already carried plenty of emotion, noise and consequences beyond the scoreboard.
