Tennessee Vols Hit Full Pads as Spring Practice Intensifies

Tennessee's spring football practice progresses with full pads as quarterbacks and key players showcase their skills under coach Josh Heupel's strategic camp divisions.

Tennessee football hit the practice field on Monday morning, marking an important milestone in their spring session. For the first time this spring, the Vols suited up in full pads, signaling the end of the first third of their camp under Coach Josh Heupel's structured approach.

Offense

Let's dive into the quarterbacks, the heart of the action. Although film and photos were off-limits, we caught a glimpse of the QBs working their magic in the red zone.

George MacIntyre and Faizon Brandon showcased their precision with some impressive throws. Brandon delivered a standout fade to the back pylon, connecting with Joakim Dodson, while MacIntyre hit Braylon Staley and Mike Matthews with pinpoint accuracy.

Of course, not every throw was perfect. Brandon had a misfire behind Radarious Jackson, and MacIntyre missed a similar attempt to Matthews. Many of Brandon's misses seemed rooted in timing or communication, but those are issues that can be ironed out with more practice.

Ryan Staub continues to display accuracy, though his throws lack the zip seen from MacIntyre and Brandon. Jackson had a tough drop early on but redeemed himself with some sharp catches later, courtesy of Brandon's bullets.

The wide receivers lined up with MacIntyre featuring Travis Smith Jr. (X), Staley (Y), and Matthews (Z), while Brandon worked with Jackson (X), Dodson (Y), and TK Keys (Z).

On the offensive line, David Sanders Jr., Gabriel Osenda, and Kamari Blair focused on footwork drills. Sanders appears more polished and should thrive back on the left side this year.

The running backs tackled pass protection drills, with DeSean Bishop showing his veteran chops. However, the coaches seemed to expect more from the group, leaving room for improvement as the spring progresses.

Defense

Turning to the defense, linebacker Edwin Spillman stood out. With Arion Carter sidelined, Spillman has emerged as a leader. Jeremiah Telander and Penn State transfer Amare Campbell also bring strong voices to the linebacker room.

Spillman, already an imposing figure, looks to have added muscle and speed. Meanwhile, Jadon Perlotte continues to impress with his high-energy play, promising excitement for the Vols' defense.

As Tennessee continues to gear up for the season, these early signs show a team full of potential and ready to make waves.
