Tennessee Star JP Estrella Sidelined, Leaving Fans Curious About Oklahoma Game

Despite his history of injuries, Tennessee's JP Estrella faces another setback, leaving the Vols to adjust their strategy against Oklahoma.

Tennessee's power forward, JP Estrella, is sidelined for the Vols' clash with Oklahoma, as confirmed by the SEC Availability Report. Initially listed as doubtful, Estrella is now ruled out due to soreness in his left foot.

The good news for Tennessee fans is that Estrella's condition is being monitored day-to-day, and the team doesn't anticipate a lengthy absence. This is a relief, especially considering Estrella's history with foot issues-he missed nearly all of the 2024-25 season after surgery on the same foot. However, this current setback isn't seen as severe as last year's ordeal.

The timing of the injury is a bit of a mystery. Estrella was in top form against LSU, racking up 16 points and nine rebounds in 28 minutes without any visible signs of distress.

Injuries have been a recurring theme in Estrella's college journey. Earlier this season, he dealt with both knee and ankle issues, though those absences were brief.

Standing at 6-foot-11, Estrella has been making his presence felt, averaging 9.7 points and 5.2 rebounds this season. His impact has grown since coach Rick Barnes promoted him to the starting lineup against Alabama. In the seven games since, Estrella has upped his game, averaging 11.7 points and seven rebounds.

With Estrella out, freshman DeWayne Brown is expected to step into the starting role. Brown, who has started 10 games this season, brings in averages of 5.2 points and 4.3 rebounds. Jaylen Carey, contributing 7.9 points and six rebounds, is also likely to see increased minutes.

Oklahoma's preference for a small-ball lineup might prompt Tennessee to adjust by playing Nate Ament at the four-spot alongside one big man-a strategy they've used sporadically this season.

The Vols are favored by 11.5 points over Oklahoma, according to FanDuel Sportsbook, with the over/under set at 149.5. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. ET at Thompson-Boling Arena at Food City Center, with ESPN2 covering the action.
