Tennessee finished off its homestand with a 24-14 win over Auburn, and the game turned into a grind before the Vols finally pulled away in the second half.
The matchup brought Auburn back to Neyland Stadium for the first time in 13 years, with the Tigers holding a 29-22-3 lead in the series. Both teams came in at 3-1, each carrying one SEC loss, and Tennessee wore its alternate “smokey grey” uniforms honoring General Neyland.
Neither offense found much rhythm early. The first quarter was a stretch of stalled drives and punts, and Auburn’s defense gave Tennessee real problems. Faizon Brandon was sacked twice in a row by Auburn’s Da’Shawn Womack, and the opening frame ended without either team reaching field goal range or making a red zone appearance.
Tennessee broke through first in the second quarter with a 36-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead. Auburn then had a chance to swing momentum after a fumble recovery put the Vols in a strong spot, but DeSean Bishop’s 40-yard rushing touchdown was wiped out by a holding penalty. Auburn later recovered a fumble from Duane Morris after a run up the middle, but the Tigers still couldn’t cash it in.
The Tigers finally found the end zone after an interception set them up at the Tennessee 1. Byrum Brown finished the possession with a seven-yard rushing touchdown, putting Auburn ahead 7-3. Tennessee turned to George MacIntyre to close the half, and the switch helped the Vols move the ball to the Tennessee 46 before time ran out.
MacIntyre stayed in to open the second half, and Tennessee answered immediately. A completion to Mike Matthews helped set up Bishop, who ripped off a 25-yard run to put the Vols in front 10-7. Tennessee kept the pressure on in the third quarter when Lane Dejuan came up with an interception and a 31-yard return, and Bishop turned that into another big play with a 44-yard rushing touchdown to stretch the lead to 17-7.
Auburn wasn’t done yet. Brown broke loose for a 57-yard run to get the Tigers moving again, and he connected with Boardingham to cut the margin to 17-14.
Tennessee, though, kept finding ways to answer. A pair of Auburn penalties - a personal foul and a face mask - gave the Vols a 30-yard boost heading into the fourth quarter.
Later, Tennessee got the ball back at the Auburn 19 after a turnover on downs and converted a fourth-down chance to push the lead to 24-14. Auburn had one last shot with 3:30 left, but Brown’s pass was intercepted at the Tennessee 1-yard line by Tevis Metcalf, who returned it four yards. That sealed the win for the Vols.

Alex Golesh Had A Telling Read On How Neyland Shifted This Game
Auburn left Neyland Stadium with a 24-14 loss to Tennessee, but head coach Alex Golesh came away talking as much about the shift in his own offense as the final score. After a slow start and some penalties that hampered the Tigers early, Golesh said the group found better rhythm in the second half, with the run game helping settle things down and the passing attack starting to look more efficient.
For Tennessee, that kind of midgame adjustment is exactly the sort of wrinkle Neyland has a way of amplifying. The Volunteers were able to lean on the atmosphere and the flow of the game as Auburns offense began to click more cleanly, but Goleshs comments suggested his team left with a clearer sense of where the execution improved and where the early mistakes made the difference. Tennessee's Offense Just Sparked A Debate Fans Can't Ignore
Tennessee got the result it needed against Auburn, but the way it got there left plenty to sort through. The Vols pulled out a 24-14 win to move to 4-1, and the offenses first-half unevenness put an immediate spotlight on true freshman quarterback Faizon Brandon before the ground game took over and steadied things.
DeSean Bishop was the difference-maker, putting together a career-best outing with 220 rushing yards and three touchdowns to carry Tennessee through a tense finish. Even as the offense searched for consistency, the defense helped close the door, with Dejuan Lane adding an interception and a sack in the second half to keep Auburn from mounting a late push. Tennessee Just Added More Fuel To A Debate Fans Can't Ignore
Tennessee left Auburn with a 24-14 win that nudged the Vols to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in SEC play, and the reward on the national side was just as notable. The coaches moved Tennessee up three spots to No. 14 in the latest poll, placing the Vols sixth among SEC teams and keeping them in the thick of a conference race that still feels wide open in October.
The bigger conversation, though, is happening under center. Josh Heupel addressed the quarterback change during the game but stopped short of naming a starter for next week, leaving Tennessee to head into Arkansas with the position still unsettled. For a team that has already shown it can win while sorting through that question, the next week now feels like another test of both timing and trust. [Read more 🡒]
