After the retirement of Smokey XI, the University of Tennessee was on the hunt for its next live mascot, and they’ve found a gem in Smokey XII. On Thursday morning, the announcement came that Neyland, a bluetick coonhound with a story as heartwarming as his name, would take up the mantle.
Originally, Neyland's previous owners couldn't continue to care for him, which led a dedicated dog lover to step in and ensure he found a loving home. The Smokey search team quickly saw his potential to become the next beloved mascot for the Volunteers.
Paul Plummer, dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine, captured the sentiment perfectly: “Neyland, aka Smokey XII, might just be Vol Nation’s most heartwarming walk-on success story. This beautiful bluetick coonhound has found his forever family on Rocky Top. With training support from devoted students and expert guidance from the nation’s best veterinarians, Smokey XII is ready to meet his new Volunteer family and bring excitement to fans everywhere he goes.”
Mark your calendars for April 11, when Smokey XII will make his grand debut at the Orange and White game. This annual spring scrimmage is set for 2 p.m. ET, and while the stadium is undergoing renovations, fans can still enjoy the game free of charge.
Veterinarian Zenithson Ng shared insights into Neyland’s preparation: “Neyland has a big personality and playful spirit. Through reward-based training, he is learning essential commands including sit, stay, and down. The upcoming Orange and White game presents an ideal opportunity to more fully evaluate his readiness for game day excitement ahead of the 2026 football season while giving him the chance to connect with fans and handlers in an authentic setting.”
Before officially becoming Smokey XII, Neyland was introduced to the hustle and bustle of game day environments, even attending Tennessee basketball games with his foster family. It’s clear that Neyland is poised to bring joy and energy to the sidelines, embodying the spirit of the Volunteers.
