Tennessee QBs Battle As Defense Surges In Spring

Tennessee's spring practice heats up as quarterbacks vie for the top spot and the defense steps up under returning coach Garner.

Tennessee football is back in action, hitting the practice field for their 10th session out of the 15 scheduled for spring. With a closed scrimmage, three more practices, and the much-anticipated Orange & White Game still on the horizon, the Vols are gearing up for a pivotal phase before summer kicks in.

Tuesday's practice was a mix of the usual drills and some noteworthy developments. The quarterbacks, under the meticulous eye of offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Joey Halzle, continued their battle for the starting spot. This competition is heating up, and it's anyone's guess who will emerge as the frontrunner.

A significant boost for the team came with the return of Rodney Garner. The defensive line coach, who had been absent for the early part of spring due to a procedure, made his comeback, diving straight into the action with his unit. His presence was a welcome sight, and head coach Josh Heupel shared his thoughts on the team's resilience in Garner's absence.

“They’ve handled it well,” Heupel commented, reflecting on the past week without Garner. “They still got Rodney’s voice loud and clear in the meeting room for sure. Excited to get Rodney back here, hopefully pretty quickly here as he comes off the backside of this.”

The energy at the practice facility was palpable, with players and coaches alike focused on fine-tuning their strategies. As the Vols continue to build momentum, fans can look forward to seeing how these spring sessions translate into performance on the field.
