Tennessee On Verge Of Explosive 5-Star Flip

Tennessee ramps up its recruitment efforts as five-star EDGE rusher D.J. Jacobs reevaluates his college football prospects.

Tennessee still has a live lane in the race for five-star EDGE rusher D.J. Jacobs, and that alone makes this recruitment worth watching.

Jacobs, the No. 1 prospect in 247Sports’ 2027 class, has been committed to Ohio State since December 2025. But even with that pledge in place, he’s been taking a look around late in the cycle this fall, and Tennessee has stayed firmly in the conversation for months.

The Vols have a couple things working in their favor. Jacobs is from Roswell, GA, so the proximity to family matters. There’s also a staff connection tied to his father’s playing days, which keeps Tennessee in the mix as the finish line gets closer.

Brian Smith, host of the Locked On Transfer Portal podcast, said the buzz around Tennessee is real after discussing Jacobs on the Locked On (Miami) Canes show. Jacobs was in Miami last weekend for the Hurricanes’ 52-23 win over Pittsburgh, and Smith said he’d recently heard Tennessee was still very much in play.

“It’s ironic that we’re talking about this,” Smith said about Jacobs on the show. “I spoke with somebody that’s pretty close to him and his family recently.

And he said Miami was definitely a possibility - this is right before he visited UM. And he said also, watch out for Tennessee.

He said they’re still open to opportunities - And I didn’t know it. This was just offered to me.

Somebody, like, knows that family. And I’m like, okay, if that’s the case, then anything is plausible.”

Smith added that money may no longer be the biggest factor. In his view, the offers are already so big across the board that this has shifted into a relationship-driven recruitment.

He also pointed to Tennessee’s defensive surge as a reason the Vols can’t be counted out. Rodney Garner coaches Tennessee’s defensive line, and he coached Jacobs’ father at Georgia. Meanwhile, Jim Knowles’ unit has looked far stronger this year than Tim Banks’ final defense in 2025.

That lines up with what On3’s Steve Wiltfong said before the season, when he called Tennessee’s on-field performance “pivotal” to the Vols’ chances with Jacobs. Tennessee may not be in the playoff picture right this second, but it still has a path to the 12-team field if it finishes strong.

And through the season’s first stretch, the defense has made its case. The Vols lead the nation with 35 sacks.

Wiltfong also noted that Jacobs was in Knoxville for Tennessee’s September game against Texas. The Vols didn’t win that night, but the setting gave him a look at one of Neyland Stadium’s best atmospheres and one of Tennessee’s strongest defensive showings of the season.

Ohio State still holds the edge by virtue of that December commitment. But Jacobs has clearly kept the door open, and Tennessee remains one of the schools trying to walk through it before signing day. With Miami also in the mix, this one looks like it could go right down to the wire.

Tennessees Transfer Turnover Is Already Creating Some Tough Comparisons

The offseason transfer churn around college football always invites second-guessing, and Tennessee is already seeing plenty of it as former Volunteers settle in at new programs. A look across the country shows a mixed picture for the players who left Knoxville, with some finding immediate roles and producing at a level that keeps their old team in the conversation, while others are still trying to carve out consistent opportunities.

For Tennessee, the comparisons are unavoidable because the Vols are watching ex-players make their mark in different settings, from notable impacts to quieter starts that leave their long-term value still unfolding. It is the kind of transfer snapshot that can look one way in September and another by the end of the season, which is why the next stretch will matter just as much as the first impressions. Josh Heupel's Knoxville Visit Put Tennessee Fans On Manning Watch

Josh Heupel made a stop in Knoxville on Friday night, and the sight of Tennessees head coach meeting with Baylor School freshman quarterback Marshall Manning was enough to get Volunteers fans talking. Baylors 21-7 win over Knox Catholic already had plenty of local interest, but Mannings presence added another layer, especially with the son of Peyton Manning still early in his high school career and working behind the scenes as a backup quarterback.

The visit also doubled as a recruiting trip for Tennessee, with running backs coach DeRail Sims on hand to watch five-star commit David Gabriel Georges. Georges turned in a strong performance in the game, giving the Vols another reason to keep close tabs on the matchup. For Tennessee fans, the night offered a little bit of everything: a glimpse at a familiar name, a look at a prized commit, and another reminder that the staff is staying active on the high school trail. Tennessees Next Depth Chart Already Comes With One Huge Uncertainty

An early look at Tennessees roster for next season already shows how much can change before the first snap, even before the transfer portal gets involved. The projection is built around likely NFL draft departures and a position-by-position guess at who could step into bigger roles, giving a rough sketch of what the Volunteers might look like on both sides of the ball.

Still, the biggest question hangs over the quarterback spot, where the depth chart is far from settled and could reshape the whole offense. Because this is only a preliminary exercise, it leaves plenty of room for the portal to alter the picture as well, which means Tennessees most important answers may not arrive until much later.
