Tennessee May Have Finally Found Its Chaz Coleman Answer

Tennessee is vying for Hayden Lowe's commitment to fill the void left by Chaz Coleman and bolster their pass-rushing lineup.

Tennessee is chasing a major pass-rush addition in Hayden Lowe, and the Vols may have done enough during his Knoxville visit to stay in the hunt.

The former Miami EDGE was on campus for an official visit last weekend, and the 6-5, 255-pound prospect said the atmosphere at Tennessee stood out immediately. Lowe told FanSided the game-day setting was unlike anything he had seen before, and his reaction only adds to the buzz around where this recruitment is headed.

For Josh Heupel and Rodner Garner, Lowe represents a chance to fill a glaring need for next season and beyond. Tennessee’s pursuit matters even more because that spot on the roster opened up after things never worked out with transfer Chaz Coleman, who reportedly landed a $2-3 million NIL deal from the Vols but never ended up playing a snap for Tennessee.

Coleman arrived with massive expectations, but the move fizzled before it ever had a chance to take off. Lowe would be a very different story.

If he commits to Tennessee, he’d be expected to step in right away and become the kind of disruptive edge presence fans thought they were getting with Coleman. Even after a rough stint in Coral Gables that led to Lowe and Miami parting ways, his ability to hunt quarterbacks still jumps off the page.

Lowe’s current stop at Long Beach City College doesn’t change the bigger picture around his talent. Coming out of the 2025 class, he was a five-star prospect and the No.

2 EDGE in the 247Sports Composite. That pedigree drew offers from Miami, Tennessee, USC, UCLA, Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon, and plenty of other heavy hitters.

Tennessee missed on Lowe the first time around, but getting him in the building for the Auburn game gave the Vols another shot to make their case. By all accounts, they made a strong one. Lowe said he loved the visit, and he’s expected to make his final decision in the next 2-3 weeks.

“I’ve never been to a game that was that loud, lively, and all about ball. It was just eye-opening"

When asked directly if he could see himself wearing orange down the road, Lowe didn’t hesitate.

“Oh yeah, 100 percent,” Lowe told us when asked if he envisioned himself playing for the Vols down the road. “It was a great experience.

I know some of the players, too. I can tell from just being around the guys, they’re all about ball.

That’s very valuable, and we can feed off of each other.”

Tennessee’s competition remains real. Cal, UCLA, Missouri, and Alabama are currently the main challengers, though that list could shift quickly. Alabama is set for an Oct. 24 visit, and the Vols will have to keep pushing to hold their ground.

Even with the competition, Lowe is the kind of difference-maker Tennessee has been searching for. A game-changing pass-rusher of his caliber would be a huge win for Heupel and could reshape the defense for years to come.

Tennessee's Pass Rush Is Carrying The Vols For One Big Reason

Through five games, Tennessees defensive front has been doing the heavy lifting, and it has become hard to miss how much Rodney Garners group has shaped the Vols start. The line leads the nation with 23 sacks, including 10 in conference play, and it has paired that disruption with 42 tackles for loss, a total that ranks eighth nationally.

Marion Dye and Xavier Gilliam have been central to the surge, with each posting four sacks while Gilliam has also piled up 8.5 tackles for loss. The bigger takeaway for Tennessee is that the pass rush has not just been a nice extra, it has helped keep the Vols competitive in recent games, which makes the next stretch a useful test of how long this edge can hold. Matt Rhule Just Gave Nebraska Fans An Unexpected Hollywood Moment

Matt Rhule turned up in the Season 1 finale of HBOs Lanterns with a role tied to the Cornhuskers, giving Nebraska fans an unexpected pop-culture moment to go along with the usual football talk. It is the kind of cameo that feels right at home in a sport where coaches are already larger-than-life figures, and Rhules appearance now puts him in a long line of college football personalities who have crossed over into film and television.

Mack Brown, Mike Leach, Ed Orgeron, Nick Saban, Barry Switzer, Jim Harbaugh and Brian Kelly have all found their way onto screens in one form or another, from voice work to full-on acting parts. Rhules latest surprise adds another entry to that odd little coaching rsum, and it also raises the sort of question fans always seem ready to ask: who in the sport might be next to trade the sideline for a scene? Tennessee's Run Game Already Has Arkansas Feeling The Pressure

Tennessees ground game keeps looking like the engine that can tilt a Saturday before the passing attack even needs to take center stage. After the Volunteers ran for 237 yards in the win over Auburn, with DeSean Bishop accounting for 220 of them and all three touchdowns, the production only reinforced how dangerous Josh Heupels offense becomes when it starts leaning on the run.

That kind of success has been hard for opponents to ignore, especially with Tennessee carrying a 37-2 record under Heupel when it clears 200 rushing yards and having done so in all four of its wins this season. Arkansas defensive coordinator Ron Roberts already acknowledged the challenge ahead, and the bigger question now is whether the Razorbacks can handle Tennessees physical style well enough to slow the game down before it gets away from them.
