Tennessee’s push to build out its 2028 recruiting class took a hit when one of its top safety targets chose Georgia instead.
2028 four-star safety Nick Carroll has committed to the Bulldogs over Tennessee and Florida, according to Hayes Fawcett. The Peach State native had been a major target for the Vols, but the in-state pull of Georgia won out in the end.
Carroll was ranked as high as the 48th-best player in the country, the fourth-ranked safety, and the fifth-ranked player from Georgia.
For Tennessee, the miss is part of a growing trend in the secondary. The Vols also recently lost out on four-star safeties Giovanni Tuggle and Braylen Bedford, both of whom committed to Ole Miss just a few weeks ago. Tennessee is not expected to back away from any of the three anytime soon, and will likely keep recruiting them all the way until National Signing Day of their senior years.
Rivals’ Jeremy Johnson described Carroll as a versatile defensive back with speed that jumps off the page.
“Carroll can run. He can cover a lot of ground quickly when he locks in on the football.
Carroll isn’t a big safety, but his speed makes him a problem for offenses in space. Carroll can also play physical and has a good feel for positioning himself to make tackles in the open field.
Carroll will not be pigeonholed into any particular spot in the secondary. Carroll is a safety, but he has the skill set to play cornerback if need be.
Expect Carroll to play safety at Georgia. He is most likely a free safety.
The star position may not be out of the question either. There are many similarities to current Georgia safety Rasean Dinkins.
The former Warner Robins star, Dinkins, was a playmaker all over the field in high school. Dinkins has quickly adapted and earned a big role in Georgia’s secondary.
The same tools exist in Carroll’s game. The ball skills, nose for the ball, speed and even the beginnings of a sound tackler translate to being a key contributor in Athens.”

Tennessees Arkansas Captains Reveal A Surprising Leadership Shift
Tennessees captaincy setup for Saturdays SEC matchup with Arkansas offers a small but notable glimpse into how the Vols are distributing leadership heading into another conference test. The group includes long snapper Bennett Brady, defensive tackle Xavier Gilliam, wide receiver Mike Matthews and safety TJ Metcalf, a cross-section of special teams, offense and defense that suggests the staff is leaning on voices from across the roster.
Arion Carter has been one of the steady fixtures in that role this season, so his absence from the captain group stands out even if it does not necessarily signal anything bigger than a weekly adjustment. Still, when a team makes a change like this heading into league play, it is usually worth watching, especially with Arkansas on deck and Tennessee looking for the right mix of leadership on both sides of the ball. For Tennessee, the fresh Adidas partnership sits near the top of the market, a sign of how aggressively brands are chasing premier football powers and the attention that comes with them. Penn State has also landed a major new deal this season, putting both schools at the center of one of the busiest stretches for apparel movement in recent memory. With contract expiration dates and annual payouts now tracked almost like recruiting rankings, the Volunteers remain one of the most important teams to watch as the next wave of school-and-brand decisions starts to sort itself out.
