Georgia Tech had Colorado where it wanted it late Thursday night, then let the game slip away in the final minute.
The Yellow Jackets carried a six-point lead into the closing stretch, only to watch Colorado drive down the field and grab a 14-13 win. Then, with Georgia Tech getting one last chance to salvage it, former Tennessee transfer Boo Carter got to the kick and blocked the potential game-winner to finish it for the Buffaloes.
Georgia Tech’s first game of the season was ugly in a lot of the ways that matter most. The offense never reached the end zone, the ground game never got rolling, and the ball kept getting put on the turf in miserable conditions. Humidity made things slick, and the Jackets still managed three fumbles, losing one of them, while Colorado had two fumbles of its own.
The lone Georgia Tech touchdown came on a 100-yard kickoff return in the first quarter. Outside of that, the Jackets’ offense never found much rhythm. Georgia Tech finished with just 51 rushing yards, while former Michigan transfer Justice Haynes led the way with 64 yards.
Quarterback Alberto Mendoza, the younger brother of Heisman winner Fernando Mendoza, completed 17 of 23 passes for 237 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions. He also finished with -22 rushing yards on three carries.
Colorado wasn’t exactly sharp on offense either, but the Buffaloes did enough on the ground to stay alive and close the game out. They piled up 183 rushing yards, a number Tennessee will surely notice as it looks ahead to next Saturday night’s trip to Bobby Dodd Stadium. DeSean Bishop could be in line for a big night if Georgia Tech’s defense shows the same cracks.
Carter’s role was notable beyond the final play. The former Tennessee defensive back logged significant snaps in Colorado’s secondary Thursday night, finishing with one tackle while missing on a few other chances. None of that mattered nearly as much as the kick block, which became the difference in Deion Sanders’ team’s win.
The result leaves Georgia Tech at 0-1 heading into a Week 2 matchup with No. 20 Tennessee, which is already carrying the look of the favorite. The Vols open their season Saturday afternoon against Furman in Knoxville before heading to Atlanta for their first road game of the year.
Georgia Tech and Tennessee are set for 7:00 p.m. ET on Saturday, Sept. 12.

Tennessee Is Already Chasing A Massive Lineman For Its Future
Tennessee is already looking well down the road in its offensive line recruiting, and the latest name on the board is Rex George-Taylor, a 2028 prospect from Darlington, Ga.
