The first College Football Playoff rankings handed Tennessee a spot that keeps the door wide open. The Vols landed at No. 13, and with Kentucky sitting at No. 6, Saturday night in Neyland Stadium suddenly carries even more weight.
That setup matters because Tennessee’s path is easy to read. Beat Kentucky, and the Vols strengthen their case immediately, especially with No.
14 LSU still on the schedule later this month. Add in Texas A&M and Vanderbilt, and the math gets pretty simple: go 4-0, and you’re in.
A 3-1 finish with the lone loss coming against Kentucky could still leave some room for chaos. But if that one loss comes against Vanderbilt or Texas A&M, the margin for error disappears.
There’s also movement possible right above Tennessee. Notre Dame is No. 11 and Ohio State is No. 12, so losses by either team would likely open the door for the Vols to climb. Ohio State, in particular, is dealing with Luke Fahey starting in place of the injured Julian Sayin, which only adds to the intrigue in front of Tennessee.
Josh Heupel, though, made it clear he isn’t interested in getting wrapped up in the rankings. His message was about staying locked in on what actually matters.
"There’s always a ton of noise outside of your building," Heupel said while speaking to the media. "There can be a lot of things that you can get caught up in. If you get caught up in things that don’t matter, rankings coming out, whatever it might be, you have no chance to go finish and play the way you need to every single week."
Still, the rankings are hard to ignore entirely. Tennessee being favored by 6.5 points against a Kentucky team that checked in just outside the top five says plenty about how the committee views this matchup. It also raises the stakes for what comes next.
If the Vols handle business, the committee will have a harder time looking past them. And if Tennessee’s offense can get George MacIntyre going against the Wildcats while Xavier Gilliam, Arion Carter, and the defense keep Kentucky in check the way they did against No. 5 Alabama, the Vols will put themselves in a strong position to keep climbing.
As for Alabama at No. 5, that one drew its own reaction. But for Tennessee, the bigger point is simpler: the road is right there. Win this month, and the Vols make it very difficult for the committee to keep them out when it counts.

Tennessee Just Got More CFP Motivation Than Vols Fans Can Ignore
The first College Football Playoff rankings gave Tennessee a spot at No. 13, while Alabama landed at No. 5, a placement that caught plenty of attention after the Vols beat the Crimson Tide on the field. CFP Committee Chair Hunter Yurachek pointed to Alabamas stronger collection of quality wins as the reason behind the early gap, which only adds another layer to a race Tennessee still has time to influence.
For a Vols team still chasing its best path forward, the message is pretty clear: the opening rankings are only a snapshot, not a verdict. Tennessees upcoming games now carry even more weight, because a strong finish could reshape how the committee views the resume and give the Vols a chance to climb when the next set of rankings arrives. Joe Milton Just Landed The NFL Opportunity Tennessee Fans Waited For
Joe Miltons next chance arrives in a spot Tennessee fans know well: under the bright lights, with a real opportunity to show what made him such a compelling arm talent in Knoxville. The Philadelphia Eagles have named the former Volunteers quarterback their starter for Week 9 against the New York Giants, a move that bumps Tanner McKee aside and gives Milton his first NFL start after being taken in the sixth round of the 2024 draft.
It is the kind of opening that can change a young quarterbacks trajectory, especially with Philadelphia dealing with injuries to key players and Jalen Hurts already out for the season. For Tennessee supporters, it is a familiar kind of wait, finally turning into a chance to see Milton get meaningful NFL reps and a chance to prove he belongs on that stage. [Read more 🡒]
Even A Former Alabama QB Thinks Tennessee Got Jobbed
The latest College Football Playoff rankings have only deepened the frustration around Tennessees spot at No. 13, especially with Alabama sitting at No. 5 despite the Volunteers head-to-head win over the Crimson Tide. The debate has spilled beyond Knoxville, too, with former Alabama quarterback and ESPN broadcaster Greg McElroy among those openly questioning how the committee is weighing Tennessees resume against Alabamas.
What has made the reaction louder is the committees shifting emphasis from week to week, with head-to-head results carrying real weight in some cases and seeming to fade in others. Tennessees supporters have every reason to feel the inconsistency, and the broader issue now is whether the rankings are rewarding the right things or simply creating more confusion as the playoff picture tightens.
