Tennessee Has One More Recruiting Battle Fans Will Be Watching Closely

With signing day on the horizon, the Tennessee Volunteers fortify their future with the commitment of standout defensive back Preston Glasco.

Tennessee’s work on the 2027 recruiting trail picked up another important piece with the addition of Preston Glasco, a defensive back from Grayson High School.

The Vols have spent plenty of energy building out that class, which now sits at 19 commitments and already includes one of the country’s top offensive prospects in David Gabriel-Georges, a running back in the 2027 group. Glasco gives Tennessee another win in a class that continues to take shape as signing day gets closer, with the 2027 cycle set to sign in December.

Glasco enters as a developmental cornerback with obvious upside. He measured around 6-foot-2 ½ and 190 pounds in the spring after his junior season, and the tools jump off the page.

He plays with a higher center of gravity, but he has quick, efficient feet for a longer defender. He works to keep cushion in off-man coverage, will try to jam receivers and disrupt timing, and shows promising physicality when helping in run support on the perimeter.

There’s also real value at the catch point, where his length gives him an advantage. Even so, he still needs to improve at finding the football and keep developing his deep speed. The report on him makes clear that he still has more growth ahead, though he took a major step forward early in his senior season.

Tennessee isn’t done chasing the rest of its 2027 board, either. One of the biggest names still in play is in-state defensive lineman Joshua Lane, who is expected to eventually choose between the Vols and Alabama.

Tennessee Just Entered A Recruiting Battle Vols Fans Will Notice

Tennessee has jumped into the mix for one of the more closely watched running back prospects in the country, as Jayshawn Mitchell trimmed his list to 15 schools and kept the Vols in the hunt after a recent offer. The William J. Brennan High School standout from San Antonio has already built a national recruitment, and Tennessee now finds itself among a group of programs still chasing a player whose production and visits have kept plenty of coaches interested.

For the Vols, Mitchell is another reminder that the running back board remains active even with other top backs already committed. Tennessee continues to push for multiple high-profile targets, and landing a player with Mitchells profile would only add to a class that has already been gaining traction at the position. The next step will be whether the Vols can turn that late entry into real momentum against a crowded field. [Read more 🡒]

Tennessee Fans Have One Big DeSean Bishop Concern Right Now

The Heisman Trophy websites fan-driven Heisman Hopefuls section has given Tennessee supporters another reason to check in on the roster, with seven Volunteers showing up in the top five of their positional groups. Among them, DeSean Bishop has been drawing the most attention, sitting out front among the running backs and adding to the buzz around a team that already has plenty of eyes on it as the season moves forward.

The concern, though, is less about the voting and more about Bishops immediate availability after a recent injury issue. Josh Heupel said the situation is expected to settle in well for the upcoming game, but there is still a wait-and-see element for fans hoping Tennessees backfield remains intact as SEC play continues to pile up. Xavier Gilliam Is Becoming Too Important For Tennessee To Ignore

Xavier Gilliams rise has become one of the more important developments on Tennessees defense this fall, the kind of breakout that can quietly change how an opposing offense has to prepare. The defensive lineman has gone from a useful piece to a steady force up front, and his production has started to match the growing recognition around him. He has already picked up midseason All-America honors from multiple organizations, a sign that his impact is being noticed well beyond Knoxville.

For Tennessee, the bigger takeaway is what Gilliam now means to the unit week after week. His ability to disrupt plays in the backfield has made him a central part of what the Volunteers are trying to do defensively, and the attention he is drawing only adds to that burden for opposing quarterbacks and blocking schemes. At this point, the question is less whether he belongs in the conversation and more how high that conversation can go as the season moves forward. [Read more 🡒]
