Tennessee has never lost a football game on Aug. 30.
The Vols are 4-0 all time on that date, a perfect run that started back in 1987 and most recently continued in 2025 with a 45-26 win over Syracuse at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.
That latest victory came with Joey Aguilar making his Tennessee debut at quarterback. Aguilar finished 16 of 28 for 247 yards and three touchdowns, giving the Vols plenty of juice through the air in a season-opening performance that set the tone early.
Tennessee also got a strong night on the ground. Star Thomas led the way with 92 rushing yards on 12 carries and added a seven-yard touchdown catch. DeSean Bishop chipped in 82 rushing yards and a score of his own on 11 attempts, helping Tennessee keep the offense rolling.
Braylon Staley was the top receiving threat, finishing with 95 yards and a touchdown. Miles Kitselman added another touchdown grab for the Vols.
The defense had its moments too. Arion Carter posted nine tackles and a sack, while Jeremiah Telander came away with an interception.
The other three Aug. 30 wins in Tennessee history came in very different settings. The Vols beat Iowa 23-22 in the Kickoff Classic V at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, in 1987. They handled Texas Tech 52-17 at Neyland Stadium in 1997, then knocked off Fresno State 24-6 at home in 2003.
Two of those games were played on neutral fields and two were at Neyland Stadium, but the result has always been the same for Tennessee on Aug. 30: a win.

Charles Kippy Browns death at 71 lands as a significant loss for Tennessee football, where he was remembered not just as a coach but as a connector across eras. Browns path through the sport was rare even before he got to Knoxville, beginning as the first Black quarterback at Sweetwater High School and later at the University of Memphis, then stretching into a long coaching career that included stops in college, the NFL and the XFL.
At Tennessee, Brown worked as an assistant under three head coaches and also served briefly as interim head coach, giving him a presence in the program that went well beyond one era or one staff. His NFL rsum was just as notable, lasting 22 seasons and ending with a Super Bowl XLVIII title with the Seattle Seahawks, a mark that underscored how widely respected he was in coaching circles even as Vols fans knew him for the steadier, quieter work he did in Knoxville. Joe Milton's NFL Future Just Took Another Unexpected Turn
Joe Miltons NFL path has already taken a few sharp turns, and it has another one to navigate after Dallas released the former Tennessee quarterback following his waiver.
