Tennessee Gets Another Shot With Elite Edge Target

As Tennessee looks to bolster their defense, the Vols are keen to impress top junior college prospect Hayden Lowe during his high-stakes visit this Saturday.

Tennessee will get another crack at one of the most intriguing defensive line targets on its board this weekend.

Hayden Lowe, a four-star junior college defensive end at Long Beach City College in California, is scheduled to visit Knoxville when the Vols host Kentucky on Saturday, according to Rivals recruiting reporter Greg Biggins. The 6-foot-5, 255-pound edge rusher is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 1 junior college defensive end in the country and by Rivals as the No. 2 junior college defensive end.

Lowe’s path to this point has already made him a notable name in the recruiting cycle. He originally signed with Miami as part of the Hurricanes’ 2025 recruiting class and was rated a five-star prospect coming out of high school before making the move to junior college football in August. Tennessee has stayed in the mix throughout that transition.

The Vols first offered Lowe a scholarship in December 2023, back when he was still in high school. After he arrived at Long Beach City College, Tennessee renewed its push, and Lowe has already been back on campus once this season. That visit came on Oct. 3, when the Vols hosted Auburn.

The upcoming trip gives Tennessee another chance to build on that relationship as Lowe’s recruitment keeps moving. Alabama, California and Missouri are also among the programs that have offered him since he joined Long Beach City College, so the Vols are not alone in the chase.

For Tennessee, Lowe fits the kind of profile that naturally draws attention: size, production potential and the experience that comes with playing junior college football. An experienced defensive end would be a valuable addition as the Vols continue shaping their roster, and Lowe’s background gives Tennessee another high-end defensive talent to pursue.

The Vols currently have 19 commitments in their 2027 recruiting class, and Lowe would be another major name to track as they keep building. With Kentucky coming to town, he’ll be one of the visitors worth watching closely on a weekend that already has plenty of recruiting eyes on Knoxville.

Tennessee Faces A Costly Problem At The Worst Time Against Kentucky

Tennessees penalty issues have been a running problem all season, and the timing could hardly be worse with Kentucky next on the schedule. The Volunteers have been flagged 61 times and sit near the bottom of FBS in penalty yards, a frustrating trend for a team that has often had the talent to control games but not always the discipline to finish them cleanly.

Kentucky brings a different kind of pressure, playing with one of the nations better penalty profiles and a turnover margin that has helped separate it from Tennessee this fall. Josh Heupel has already pointed to the Wildcats strong play and made it clear the Vols will need a cleaner performance to keep pace, which only raises the stakes for a team trying to avoid giving away yards and possessions in a game where every mistake could matter. Tennessee Brings Dark Mode Into A Kentucky Test That Could Get Lopsided

A night game in Knoxville already changes the feel of the week, and Tennessee is leaning into it with its Dark Mode black uniforms for Kentuckys visit. The Vols have made these prime-time home settings feel routine under Josh Heupel, and the matchup comes with another layer of familiarity: Tennessee has not lost to Kentucky during his tenure, a run that has helped turn this rivalry into one the Vols have controlled.

The numbers around the game point to why this one could tilt quickly if Tennessee starts fast. Third-down efficiency has been a separator for both teams, and the historical series has long favored the Vols, who have had the upper hand in recent meetings as well. With the lights on and the black uniforms out, Tennessee gets a chance to make another statement in a series that has increasingly belonged to the home side. [Read more 🡒]

Tennessee Has A Huge Kentucky Weekend Beyond The Scoreboard

Saturdays game against Kentucky at Neyland Stadium is carrying more weight than the SEC standings for Tennessee. The Volunteers are set to bring in several highly regarded high school prospects for the weekend, including quarterback commit Kaden Craft along with defensive standouts Antonio Thomas Jr. and Joshua Lane, giving the staff a chance to showcase the program in front of some of the nations most promising young players.

The timing matters because this is part of Tennessees push for the 2028 class, and a big home atmosphere can still leave an impression long after the final whistle. With the Volunteers trying to turn a marquee conference date into a recruiting advantage, the visit list gives the weekend an extra layer of intrigue beyond what happens on the field. [Read more 🡒]
