Tennessee’s offense came out of the Texas game with more questions than answers, but one film analyst isn’t ready to pin Saturday’s 20-17 loss on Faizon Brandon.
Brooks Austin said the freshman quarterback was dealing with far more than a few missed throws. Tennessee finished with 145 passing yards from Brandon, who went 17-for-29 with one touchdown and no interceptions. He also had two rushing yards after being sacked 10 times, a brutal afternoon behind an offense that never found any rhythm.
Austin pushed back hard on the idea that Brandon was simply the problem.
“Let’s not get the message twisted here,” Austin said. “They couldn’t run the ball.
They gave up 10 sacks. Don’t be talking about young quarterback.
They didn’t really give him a lot there. I don’t think they did.
Yeah, some benders were open on third-and-seven. Alright, but what the freeze frame doesn’t show you is that Rasheem Biles is standing right over the ball.
And yes, as we go to pump, he might’ve flipped his hips to the bender, and the dig might have been coming open, or the shallow cross might have been coming open, but all I’m seeing is color all over the place. I’m seeing a bunch of white jerseys and a bunch of what I think to be tight windows and a bunch of oh my God if I don’t get out right now I’m going to die.
“I think that’s really, really tough for any young quarterback. I have tremendous faith and belief that Faizon is going to be fine.
He’s going to be great. I think we saw a lot of competitive integrity from that young man, cause that dude played his backside off in a football game where he didn’t have a lot of help.
No run game, no protection, how do you expect to win?”

Josh Heupel echoed part of that view after the game, saying Brandon did get sped up at times but also making it clear the burden was not on the quarterback alone.
“There’s some things that he’s going to be able to see or did see even on the iPad,” Heupel said. “I think early, good opponent, big game, it was sped up just a little bit for him.
Then when you start giving up pressure, too, that can speed him up, too. All those things combined were a factor.
The 10 other guys around him got to play better, and he’s going to have to play better, too.”
Tennessee’s next shot comes at home again. The Vols will host Auburn at 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, with the game set for ESPN.
