Tennessee’s point guard board in the 2027 class keeps getting wider, and the latest name to land in the Vols’ mix is one of the biggest yet.
Five-star point guard Reese Alston released a top seven on Monday night that included Tennessee, 247sports’ Brandon Jenkins first reported. Houston, Kentucky, Louisville, LSU, Wichita State and Vanderbilt rounded out the group.
Alston comes in as a major national target. 247sports lists the Houston native as the No. 9 player and No. 4 point guard in the country, while Rivals has him even higher at No. 7 overall and No. 2 among point guards. The 6-foot-2 guard plays at Second Houston Baptist School, where he helped the Eagles to a 31-4 record in his junior season.
His recruitment is already moving along. Alston has taken official visits to Louisville and Wichita State, along with an unofficial visit to Kentucky. More official trips are expected this fall, and Tennessee will need to get him on campus if it wants to become a real factor in the race.
The Vols are clearly attacking the position aggressively in 2027. They’re also in the top group for five-star point guard Nasir Anderson, hosted four-star Antonio Pemberton on an official visit this past weekend and have four-star Micah Gordon scheduled for the first weekend in September.
That puts Tennessee in the hunt for the No. 2, No. 3, No. 5 and No. 8 point guards in the 2027 cycle, according to the 247sports composite rankings.
The Vols are hoping to keep VCU transfer Terrence Hill Jr. beyond the 2026-27 season, but the plan is to build toward a two-headed backcourt option. Anderson is especially appealing to Tennessee because of his defense on the perimeter, where the staff views him as one of the best in the class.
So far, Tennessee still doesn’t have a commitment in the 2027 cycle, but the visit calendar is filling up. Four-star shooting guard Justin Wise and four-star center Chris Brown are set for official visits on Sept. 19 weekend, the same weekend Tennessee football hosts Kennesaw State. Five-star wing Malachi Jordan and three-star forward Davis Cochran are scheduled to visit the weekend the Vols football team hosts Texas at Neyland Stadium.
As things stand, Tennessee has only two players on its roster for the upcoming season who are definitely out of eligibility, which means at least two scholarships are available. That number could climb, though, with possible NBA Draft decisions and more movement through the transfer portal.

Five-star defensive line prospect DJ Jacobs is still very much on Tennessees board, even with Ohio State holding his current commitment.
