Tennessee Defense Just Landed Another Blow Before The Season Starts

Tennessee's defense takes another hit as Edrees Farooq's injury challenges Jim Knowles' strategic acumen once more.

Edrees Farooq’s season is over, and Tennessee’s secondary just took another hard hit.

The safety, who was supposed to be a major piece for Josh Heupel and the Vols this fall, went down during practice this week and was taken to the hospital. Tennessee later announced that Farooq suffered a torn patellar tendon in his right knee, ending his year before it ever got rolling.

“We stand with Edrees and support him as he begins the recovery process,” Tennessee said in a statement delivering the news of the injury. “We know he will continue to make a strong leadership impact on our team this fall.”

Farooq is now the second key defender ruled out for the season, joining sophomore linebacker Jaedeon Harmon. Miami transfer Jadais Richard also won’t be available in ’26 because of an upper-body injury.

For new defensive coordinator Jim Knowles, this is another problem piled onto a defense already dealing with major losses. The offseason buzz around Tennessee’s pass rush took a hit when 5-star transfer Chaz Coleman was no longer with the program, and losing Harmon in the middle of the defense only made things worse. Now Farooq is out too, and that means another starter the Vols were counting on won’t be there once the season begins.

That puts the spotlight on Dejuan Lane.

The 6-2, 215-pound defensive back is expected to become a much bigger part of the picture now that Farooq is gone. Lane isn’t new to the field - he played enough last season to log 29 total tackles and one sack - but this is a different kind of responsibility. He’ll be asked to move from dependable backup to difference-maker.

TJ Metcalf, a Michigan transfer, should take the other starting safety spot.

Farooq’s absence leaves a real void. He finished 2025 with 76 tackles, four forced fumbles and two interceptions, production Tennessee was counting on to anchor the back end and provide leadership for the defensive backs. Instead, the Vols have to regroup fast, and Knowles has to find a way to keep the defense from feeling the full weight of these injuries.

Tennessees First Scrimmage Just Changed The Vols Starter Battle

Tennessees first fall camp scrimmage did what these sessions are supposed to do: it started to clarify a roster full of competitions and gave the staff a better feel for where the depth chart might be headed heading into the 2026 season. After a summer of evaluating movement at key spots, the Vols now have a clearer picture of several projected starters for the season opener, with some of the biggest decisions still tied to how the next few weeks of camp unfold.

The quarterback and linebacker rooms remain the ones to watch most closely, especially with the opener drawing nearer and a few lineup spots still in flux. The latest camp observations point to a tightening race in one area and an opening elsewhere, which makes Tennessees next scrimmage just as important as the first one if the Vols are going to settle these battles with confidence. Former Vol Joey Aguilar Just Gave Fans A Reason To Watch Jacksonville

Joey Aguilar wasted little time giving Jacksonville a reason to pay attention in his NFL debut, getting into the Jaguars' Week 1 preseason game and showing the same kind of arm that made him an interesting add after going undrafted. The former Tennessee and Appalachian State quarterback got his first pro action in a setting where every snap can matter for a player trying to carve out a role, and he delivered the kind of early flash that tends to get noticed in camp.

Liam Coen had something to say afterward about Aguilars first completion, and it pointed to the type of play the Jaguars were willing to let him try. For Tennessee fans, it is another reminder that Aguilar is still in the mix at the next level, even if the path from preseason cameo to something more meaningful is always a long one. [Read more 🡒]

Tennessee's AP Poll Reveal Carries More Weight Than Fans Think

With the 2026 AP Poll set to land Monday, Tennessee is about to get an early measuring stick for where it stands nationally as camp turns into game prep. The Volunteers are expected to show up in the Top 25, with the Coaches Poll already slotting them at No. 18 and a few ballots pushing them closer to No. 22, which gives some context to how the outside world views a team that still has plenty to sort out before the season opener on Sept. 5.

The more important part in Knoxville is what comes next after the rankings hit. Tennessee just wrapped a critical scrimmage as it works through major August decisions, and the poll will serve less as a prize than a reminder of how much is riding on the final stretch of preseason work, especially with the offense and defense both still taking shape in their own ways.
