Less than a month after his Tennessee commitment, Asa Barnes wasted no time showing why the Volunteers pushed hard to land him.
The Westview running back opened the season with a huge night on the road against Memphis Academy of Science and Engineering on Friday, powering the Chargers to a 30-14 win with three touchdowns, more than 100 rushing yards and an interception on defense. For a team trying to defend a Class 3A state title, Barnes looked every bit like the kind of centerpiece that can carry a season.
MASE made things uncomfortable from the start. The Phoenix came in with a physical, talented group, and the biggest name on the field was four-star defensive lineman JaMarkus Pittman, the Ole Miss commit who is ranked as the No. 2 defensive lineman in the country according to recruiting services. Pittman lived up to that reputation, causing problems in the trenches and making life difficult for Westview’s offensive line all night.
But Barnes kept answering.
The 5-foot-11, 200-pound senior showed the full package that made Tennessee make him a priority. He ran through contact, bounced runs to the edge for extra yards, and worked into open space as a receiver.
When Westview needed a short-yardage finish, he delivered. When the Chargers needed a spark, he was there again.
Barnes is coming off a junior year that featured 1,208 rushing yards and 25 touchdowns on the way to a Class 3A state championship, and Friday was a reminder that those numbers were no accident. He accounted for over 1,700 yards and 31 touchdowns last season, and he carried that momentum right into the opener.
His impact wasn’t limited to offense, either. Barnes also came up with an interception and delivered a few hard hits that helped Westview force a key turnover and swing the game back in the Chargers’ favor. That kind of two-way influence has become part of his reputation around West Tennessee, and it showed again in a game that asked him to do a little bit of everything.
Westview head coach Matt McConnell leaned on his star back throughout a matchup that was billed as one of the toughest on the schedule. MASE’s size and speed, especially up front with Pittman, tested the Chargers early, but Barnes’ ability to create when plays broke down ended up separating the two teams.
The Chargers are coming off a 14-0 championship season, and the pressure is on to do it again. Barnes enters his senior year with Tennessee already on board and plenty of attention following him. If Friday night was the first look, the rest of Tennessee’s defenses have been warned.
