Tennessee Basketball Game at Georgia Delayed After Sudden SEC Decision

Weather delays set the stage for a high-stakes SEC showdown as Tennessee travels to face a ranked Georgia squad with recent history-and momentum-on the line.

SEC Reschedules Tennessee vs. Georgia Basketball Showdown Due to Winter Storms

The SEC is pushing back Tennessee’s road matchup against Georgia by 24 hours, shifting the game from Tuesday to Wednesday night at 7 p.m. ET in Athens. The move comes in response to widespread winter weather sweeping across the Southeast, making travel conditions difficult-and potentially dangerous-for the Vols.

Tennessee’s travel plans were already impacted after their Saturday night game at Alabama. Originally scheduled to return home that evening, the team had to delay their departure due to weather issues in Knoxville, finally making the trip back on Sunday. With icy conditions continuing into the week, the SEC made the call to give Tennessee extra time to travel safely to Athens.

From a scheduling standpoint, the shift doesn’t cause much disruption. The SEC typically slots its midweek games on either Tuesday or Wednesday, so the matchup still fits neatly into the conference’s broadcast and logistical framework.

Now, onto the basketball.

Georgia has quietly become one of the more intriguing teams in the SEC this season. Sitting at 16-4 overall and 4-3 in conference play, the Bulldogs have climbed to No. 16 in the latest AP Poll. It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster lately for Mike White’s squad-they eked out a close win at Missouri before getting thumped by 20 at Texas-but there’s no denying the growth of this team in White’s fourth year at the helm.

The Bulldogs have been rock-solid at home, boasting an 11-1 record inside Stegeman Coliseum. Their only loss in Athens?

A tight overtime battle against Georgia Tech. So while they’ve shown some vulnerability, especially on the road, they’ve been tough to beat in front of their home crowd.

Tennessee, meanwhile, is coming off a statement win in Tuscaloosa-a much-needed one, too. The Vols had just one true road win on the season before Saturday night, but they made it count.

Nate Ament exploded for 29 points, and Ja’Kobi Gillespie added 24 as Tennessee took down Alabama for the fifth straight time. That win bumped the Vols to 13-6 on the year and 3-3 in SEC play, putting them right back in the thick of things as we approach the heart of conference season.

Rick Barnes’ group has had Georgia’s number in recent years. Tennessee has won five straight against the Bulldogs, dating back to the 2019-20 season. And while the Vols haven’t exactly blown Georgia out in Athens-winning 85-79 in 2024 and 75-68 in 2022-they’ve found ways to get it done when it matters.

This rescheduled matchup sets up a compelling midweek clash between a surging Georgia squad looking to defend its home floor and a Tennessee team that may have just found its rhythm on the road. Weather may have delayed this one, but it should be worth the wait.
