Steve Sarkisian had every reason to feel good after Texas slipped out of Neyland Stadium with a 20-17 win. The Longhorns survived a tight, physical game and came away with a result that kept them at No. 1 in the country.
But his postgame comments changed the conversation fast.
In speaking with the media after the game, Sarkisian pointed to Tennessee players leaving the field with injuries as part of his case for how hard Texas played. That included this line:
"I think they had eight guys get carted off, so I'm not sure who wrote the article today and what coach said, 'we weren't a physical football team.' They might want to write another article," Sarkisian said in absurd fashion.
The reaction was immediate because the optics were rough. Tennessee’s injury situation started early, with left guard Wendell Moe Jr. hurting his left ankle in the first half.
Moe spent several minutes on the ground before being helped off and then making his way back to the locker room. Not long after that, Faizon Brandon left briefly after hurting his shoulder while fighting for extra yards, though he did return to the game.
That context made Sarkisian’s point land even worse. Using the Vols’ players getting banged up as proof of Texas toughness came off badly, especially in a game where Tennessee and Texas traded blows all night.
There’s no question Sarkisian has built something strong in Austin, and Texas earned credit for closing out a back-and-forth game on the road. But his decision to lean on Tennessee injuries in the aftermath was a bad look, and one he’ll have to do better on moving forward.
