Patrick Mahomes Stuns Fans With Unexpected Shoutout at NFL Combine

Patrick Mahomes' public support highlights Jermod McCoy's journey from high school standout to first-round draft prospect, underscoring ties from Whitehouse High and beyond.

At the NFL Combine on Thursday, Tennessee fans weren't the only ones keeping an eye on Jermod McCoy. Super Bowl-winning quarterback Patrick Mahomes also took notice. Both athletes share an alma mater in Whitehouse High School, located in Tyler, TX, about 115 miles east of Dallas.

Back in February 2020, McCoy shared a nostalgic moment on social media, posting an old photo of himself with Mahomes at a Whitehouse Wildcats youth football game. This post was a gesture of support for Mahomes as he prepared for Super Bowl LIV against the San Francisco 49ers, a game where VFL Jauan Jennings famously threw a touchdown pass.

Fast forward to Thursday, and Mahomes returned the favor by quote-tweeting McCoy’s post, sending his best wishes as McCoy navigates the NFL Combine and draft process. Both athletes proudly used the hashtag ‘WhitehouseWildcats’ to highlight their shared roots.

McCoy, along with six of his Tennessee teammates, is in Indianapolis this week for the NFL Combine, a crucial step in their journey to the pros. Thursday saw defensive backs and tight ends addressing the media, discussing their college experiences and future ambitions in the NFL.

A significant topic for McCoy was his health status. Thirteen months ago, he suffered an ACL tear that kept him out for the entire 2025 college football season. Despite this setback, he remains a projected first-round pick, and teams are keen to assess his recovery progress this week.

McCoy assured the media that he is medically cleared but chose to reserve his on-field workouts for his Pro Day in Knoxville instead of participating in the Combine drills on Friday.

“I just want to make sure I’m putting the best thing out,” McCoy explained in a video shared by Buck Reising. “Getting some more training time. Doing all that at Pro Day.”

Tennessee's UT Pro Day is set for Tuesday, March 31, on the Volunteers’ campus, though it will be closed to the public. Fans can look forward to updates and highlights as McCoy and his teammates showcase their skills.
