The coaching carousel at NC State is spinning once again, with Tennessee's associate head coach Justin Gainey emerging as a prime candidate for the Wolfpack's head coaching position. NC State officials have landed in Chicago to interview Gainey, a move first reported by PackPower’s Cory Smith.
Earlier in the day, NC State interviewed Saint Louis head coach Josh Schertz in Saint Louis. Despite Schertz having recently signed an extension with the Billikens, he remains a top contender for the position.
Gainey, a former NC State player from 1996-2000, is another leading candidate as the Wolfpack aim to swiftly fill the vacancy left by Will Wade's departure to LSU. Both Gainey and Schertz have been prominently featured on NC State's shortlist.
Since joining Rick Barnes' staff at Tennessee ahead of the 2021-22 season, Gainey has made a significant impact. Elevated to associate head coach following Mike Schwartz's move to East Carolina, Gainey has been instrumental in Tennessee's defensive prowess. Under his guidance, the Vols have reached the Sweet 16 four times and the Elite Eight three times, consistently ranking high in KenPom’s adjusted defensive efficiency metrics.
This marks the second consecutive year that NC State is seeking a head coach. Gainey was previously considered for the role before Wade was hired from McNeese State.
Reflecting on his connection to NC State, Gainey shared, “Being a graduate and former player there, I’ve always kept an eye on NC State. I love the place.
It’s a great institution.” He expressed gratitude for being considered, attributing his recognition to the success achieved at Tennessee under Coach Barnes.
During his playing days, Gainey was a standout point guard, starting 103 of 128 games. He earned a spot on the 1997 All-ACC Tournament Team, playing a pivotal role in NC State’s memorable run to the championship game.
Gainey’s coaching career began at NC State, where he spent four years on Sidney Lowe’s staff. His journey included roles at Elon and Appalachian State, bringing him full circle back to his home state of North Carolina.
As Tennessee prepares to face Michigan in the Elite Eight, Gainey and the Vols are on the cusp of their first Final Four appearance. Michigan enters the game as the favorite, but with Gainey’s strategic acumen, Tennessee is ready to challenge the odds.
