Nate Ament Stuns as Julius Erving Award Finalist for Tennessee

Rising star Nate Ament of the University of Tennessee has been named a finalist for the prestigious Julius Erving Award, highlighting his standout performance as a top small forward in college basketball.

In the heart of Knoxville, the University of Tennessee's Nate Ament has emerged as a standout in college basketball, earning his place as one of the five finalists for the prestigious Julius Erving Award. This accolade, named after the legendary Hall of Famer, celebrates the top small forwards in Division I men's basketball, and Ament's inclusion in this elite group is a testament to his impressive performance on the court.

Joining Ament in the finalist lineup are BYU's A.J. Dybantsa, Florida's Thomas Haugh, Iowa State's Milan Momcilovic, and Texas' Dailyn Swain. Notably, Ament is one of three SEC players and one of two freshmen in the mix, highlighting his dual impact as both a conference standout and a rising star.

Ament's season stats are nothing short of remarkable. Averaging 17.4 points, he leads his team with 6.4 rebounds per game, alongside 2.4 assists and 1.0 steal over 29 games.

His performance in SEC play is particularly noteworthy, with a scoring average of 19.0 points per game, placing him ninth in the league. His shooting prowess is evident with a 36.8 percent success rate from beyond the arc and an 80.2 percent free throw accuracy.

Recognized as a Second Team All-SEC player by both league coaches and the Associated Press, Ament is making history as the fourth freshman in two decades to notch 28-plus points in at least four SEC games. His consistency shines through with 19 games scoring 16 or more points, including 10 with 20-plus points, and 24 games with at least five rebounds.

The 6-foot-10 forward from Manassas, Virginia, also ranks impressively in weekly honors, securing seven freshman accolades and six SEC Freshman of the Week titles. Nationally, he's in the top 30 for free throws made per game, with his 164 total already nearing Tennessee’s single-season top 10.

Ament's talents have also placed him on the Wayman Tisdale Award Midseason Watch List and the Naismith Trophy Late Season Team, further underscoring his impact this season.

As the month progresses, the finalists will present their cases to Julius Erving and the Hall of Fame's selection committee, which includes a distinguished panel of basketball experts. The announcement of the 2026 Julius Erving Award winner will coincide with the unveiling of the Men's Starting Five, which also honors the best at each position with awards named after legends like Bob Cousy and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

Tennessee has a strong tradition in these honors, with last year’s standout performances from Chaz Lanier and Zakai Zeigler, and Dalton Knecht's win in 2024.

Looking ahead, Ament and the 25th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers are gearing up for the SEC Tournament, set to tip off Thursday at 3 p.m. ET at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena. As the fifth seed, they'll face off against either Auburn or Mississippi State, with the action broadcast live on SEC Network.
