Naomi White Is Giving Tennessee Fans A Reason To Watch Closely

Tennessee's Naomi White discusses her transition from Northern Arizona's standout star to adapting to the challenges and opportunities in the SEC, along with her passions off the court.

Tennessee guard Naomi White is settling into her new world in Knoxville one meal, one scrimmage and one game at a time.

The Lady Vols transfer arrived after a huge freshman season at Northern Arizona, where she earned Big Sky Freshman of the Year honors and put her name in the record book by scoring 667 points and knocking down 92 three-pointers. That kind of production naturally raises the same question every time a standout from another level steps into the SEC: can it carry over?

So far, White sounds like a player who’s embracing the adjustment instead of fighting it.

“I’ve learned a lot,” White told Vols On SI Thursday. “I’ve definitely never played at this level before.

So I think the people we’ve scrimmaged have definitely helped me become better, learn new things and build my IQ up. I’ve also learned how to play defense more.

I’ve been better at my defense, been lower and been more focused on it. And just not being a one-dimensional player.”

That growth has shown up in practice, where her offensive rhythm has started to smooth out. The Lady Vols have also talked plenty about the press defense and the conditioning it demands, but White doesn’t appear to be having trouble keeping up. If anything, that part of her game should keep sharpening as she gets more comfortable.

Life off the court is a little simpler. White is still getting used to Knoxville, and when she’s not working, her habits are pretty easy to read.

“Around here I like to eat,” White said. “I like to eat a lot and I like to sleep.

So if I’m not eating, I’m definitely sleeping. Or I play my PlayStation.

I’m usually on Fortnite. I am a gamer.

Fortnite or Call of Duty.”

She said she usually plays online by herself, though she knows she needs to start logging in with her teammates more often. As for how she stacks up with a controller in her hands, White isn’t shy about her confidence.

The food tour has already produced a favorite. Like a lot of newcomers, she’s been trying spots around town, and one place near campus has impressed her more than she expected.

“I really like Brenz Pizza, which is very surprising,” White said. “It’s not a restaurant, restaurant, but I think it’s a very good pizza. I’ve never had pizza that good before, so I’m really liking Brenz Pizza.”

The early signs suggest White is adjusting quickly on both fronts. She’s still learning the ropes in Knoxville, but her scoring ability and comfort against higher-level competition have already shown through. Tennessee is looking for dependable shooting this season, and White has the kind of stroke that can give the Lady Vols exactly that.

Tennessee Just Lost Another Key Piece Up Front

Tennessees offensive line had been trending in the right direction before Donovan Haslam went down in the first half against South Carolina, giving the unit a little more stability after recent games with fewer sacks allowed. Haslam had settled in at right guard, and his presence helped the Volunteers keep building around an up-front group that had started to look more settled.

His upper-body injury forced another in-game shuffle, with Shamurad Umarov stepping in as Tennessee had to adjust on the fly. For a line that had finally found some traction, losing a key interior piece in the middle of a game is the kind of setback that can quickly change the feel of the entire offense. [Read more 🡒]

Tennessee Fans Will Not Like One Detail About This South Carolina Game

Tennessee heads into its trip to South Carolina with a little extra baggage from the recent history between these teams. The Volunteers have not forgotten the 2022 loss in Columbia, and the setup for this one already has a familiar edge to it, with kickoff set for 3:30 p.m. ET on ESPN and the matchup carrying more weight than a standard SEC date on the calendar.

The line has only added to the frustration for Tennessee fans, since South Carolina is favored by 2.5 points despite the Vols being ranked higher. There is also a layer of unease attached to the officiating after referee David Smith, a former Alabama quarterback, was on the crew for that 2022 game in Columbia, which makes this weekends meeting feel like more than just another road test. Mike Matthews Gave Tennessee The Jolt It Desperately Needed

A change of pace from the usual script gave Tennessee exactly the spark it needed in the first half against South Carolina. Mike Matthews, already an important part of the passing game as a junior wide receiver, took a Wildcat snap and turned it into a rushing touchdown, helping the Volunteers grab their first lead of the afternoon by halftime.

Matthews had already shown this season that he can finish drives as a receiver, with three touchdown catches to his name, but this one added a different layer to his value. For a Tennessee offense that needed a jolt, the play was a reminder that Matthews can impact the game in more than one way, and that kind of versatility can matter as the Vols try to steady themselves in a tight spot.
