Monica Abbott Is Coming Back To Rocky Top For A Special Honor

Monica Abbott, celebrated for her legendary softball career at Tennessee and Olympic triumphs, returns as the grand marshal for the 2026 Homecoming parade, marking a nostalgic and inspirational moment for the Lady Vols community.

One of the most decorated players in Tennessee history is headed back to Rocky Top for Homecoming, and this time she’ll be in the spotlight as the grand marshal. Former Lady Vols softball pitcher Monica Abbott will lead Tennessee’s 2026 Homecoming parade on Friday, Nov. 6.

The parade is set to start at 4 p.m. in front of Fraternity Park, then move down Volunteer Boulevard before finishing near Neyland Stadium. Abbott called the invitation a meaningful one.

“What a great honor,” Abbott told . “It’s not every day you get to do that.”

Abbott’s Tennessee career still stands as one of the most dominant runs in college softball. She pitched for the Lady Vols from 2004 through 2007 and put together a staggering 189-34 record with a 0.79 ERA and 2,440 strikeouts. She also threw 23 no-hitters, including six perfect games, and totaled 112 shutouts.

Her impact showed up in the postseason, too. Tennessee reached the Women’s College World Series three straight years from 2005 through 2007, and in Abbott’s final season the Lady Vols made it all the way to the championship series and finished as national runners-up.

The awards piled up along the way. Abbott was a four-time first-team All-American and four-time All-SEC selection.

She won SEC Pitcher of the Year in 2004, 2005 and 2007, sharing the honor in 2005. In 2007, she added USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year and the Honda Award for Softball to her resume.

Tennessee retired her No. 7 jersey in 2013.

Her success didn’t stop when she left Knoxville. Abbott went on to win two Olympic silver medals with Team USA and captured a gold medal at the 2010 World Championship.

She also once held the Guinness World Record for the fastest softball pitch after reaching 77 mph in a professional game in 2012. That mark has since been topped by another Tennessee pitcher, Karlyn Pickens, whose fastest pitch is listed by Guinness at 79.4 mph in 2025.

Abbott has stayed close to the game since her playing days ended. She works as a college softball commentator and analyst for ESPN and the SEC Network, and she also founded the Monica Abbott Scholarship to support multisport female athletes who show leadership in the classroom and on the field.

Homecoming week runs from Nov. 1-7 and wraps up with Tennessee hosting Kentucky at Neyland Stadium. For Vols fans, Abbott’s return adds another big name to a celebration already tied to one of the program’s true icons.

Lady Vols Showed Off A Depth Tennessee Fans Will Notice Fast

The only exhibition game on Tennessees schedule offered an early look at how many different ways this Lady Vols roster can beat you, and Florida A&M had no answer for it. Tennessee rolled to a 132-63 win while forcing 37 turnovers and turning those takeaways into 45 points, the kind of pressure-to-points formula that can make a deep team even harder to handle once the games start to count.

Eight players finished in double figures, a sign that the scoring load could be spread around in a way Tennessee fans are likely to appreciate fast. White filled the box score with 16 points, seven assists, six rebounds and four steals, Minus added 12 points and seven rebounds, Smikle led the way with 19 points, and Janneh controlled the glass with 13 rebounds, giving the Lady Vols a glimpse of the balance they can lean on this season. DeSean Bishop Update Matters For Tennessees Stretch Run

DeSean Bishops day at South Carolina ended early, but Tennessee got a reassuring sign afterward. Josh Heupel said the running back is expected to be in good condition for the upcoming week, which matters as the Volunteers head into the stretch run with Bishop playing a bigger and bigger role in the offense.

Bishop has been pushing toward 1,000 rushing yards this season, and his presence gives Tennessee another reliable option as the games get tighter. With one year of eligibility still left after this season, keeping him available now and down the stretch looms as an important piece of the bigger picture for the Volunteers. [Read more 🡒]

Vols Suddenly Have A Real Shot At Key 2027 DB Target

Preston Glascos recruitment is moving into the home stretch, and Tennessee has positioned itself squarely in the mix for one of the more intriguing 2027 defensive backs in the region. The Grayson High School cornerback from Georgia is expected to make his college choice soon, and his list has been trimmed to Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee after a process that has already brought multiple scholarship offers and steady attention from major programs.

For the Vols, the encouraging part is that Glasco has remained in regular contact with the coaching staff and came away from a recent visit with Tennessee firmly in the conversation. That kind of late momentum matters in a battle like this, especially when the competition includes two heavyweight SEC neighbors, and it leaves Tennessee with a real opening as his decision approaches.
