Lady Vols Stun Fans by Doubling Down on Press Strategy in Tournament

Despite a challenging season, the Lady Vols are doubling down on their full-court press strategy as they prepare for a crucial NCAA Tournament showdown against NC State.

In the world of college basketball, the Lady Vols under head coach Kim Caldwell have embraced a high-octane, full-court press strategy that aims to disrupt opponents and capitalize on turnovers. The plan is simple: trap, force mistakes, and transition into easy baskets. But as any basketball fan knows, executing such an aggressive style can be a double-edged sword.

This season, Tennessee's ambitious approach has sometimes backfired, leading to easy scores for opponents due to miscommunications and overzealous plays. Despite these setbacks, the Lady Vols are sticking to their guns as they head into the NCAA Tournament as a 10-seed facing 7-seed NC State. Star forward Janiah Barker emphasized the importance of staying true to their system, which fuels their performance on both ends of the court.

Barker explained, “Our press is our defense and our offense. It’s what gets us going.

When we’re having fun, getting steals, and scoring easily, it boosts our confidence. But if the press falters, our confidence takes a hit.

We have to fully commit to it, knowing it’s our team’s identity.”

However, Caldwell has expressed concerns about the recent execution of this strategy. The Lady Vols have hit a rough patch, dropping seven consecutive games and 10 of their last 12.

The issue isn't isolated to one part of the game plan; rather, it's a matter of cohesion. The team has occasionally strayed from their identity, starting strong but then abandoning their approach mid-game.

As they prepare to face the Wolfpack, reviving their press to its former glory could be the key to extending their season. Caldwell noted, “We want it to look like it should.

It hasn’t for a while. We’ve lost our identity and haven’t been pressing with purpose.

We need to get back to flying around and guarding effectively. Our problem was we weren’t defending well in any aspect, and we lost who we are.”

The upcoming matchup against NC State, set for 8 p.m. ET on ESPN, is a chance for redemption.

It’s a rematch from November when the Wolfpack edged out a win by three points. For the Lady Vols, this game is about more than just advancing-it's about reclaiming their identity and proving their press can still be a game-changer.
