Lady Vols Face One Big Preseason Question Under Kim Caldwell

Despite missing the top 25 in preseason rankings, the Lady Vols basketball team is poised for a fresh start under head coach Kim Caldwell's new leadership and revamped roster.

The preseason polls came out Tuesday, and the Lady Vols were on the outside looking in.

Neither the AP Poll nor the Coaches Poll included Tennessee in the top 25 ahead of the 2026-27 women’s basketball season, even though Kim Caldwell’s third Lady Vols team did pick up support in both rankings.

In the AP Poll, Tennessee landed with the 32nd most votes nationally. The SEC presence at the top was strong, with South Carolina checked in at No. 1, followed by Texas at No.

6, Vanderbilt at No. 8, LSU at No.

9, Kentucky at No. 14, Ole Miss at No. 19 and Oklahoma at No.

  1. Alabama and Georgia also drew votes, but Tennessee finished ahead of both.

The Coaches Poll told a similar story. Tennessee earned the 29th most votes there, just outside the bracket of ranked teams.

South Carolina again sat at No. 1, while Texas was No. 6, LSU No.

8, Vanderbilt No. 9, Kentucky No.

14, Oklahoma No. 21 and Ole Miss No. 23.

Florida was among the teams receiving votes, though not enough to catch the Lady Vols.

Caldwell does not participate in Coaches Poll voting.

That relative respect matters because Tennessee arrives with a completely remade roster. Caldwell rebuilt the program with 15 new players, including 13 transfer portal additions and two prep commits. She also brought in two new assistant coaches, both with Power Four experience, to replace the departing staff members.

“I think when you are building a team any time this time of year, it’s really important to set your foundation, make sure you have your culture, make sure you really set your standard,” Caldwell said. “When you have so many new players, it really helps you set that standard the exact way that you want it to because they don’t know any better.”

The Lady Vols will get their first chance to show what this new group looks like on Oct. 27 in an exhibition against Florida A&M. The season opener follows on Monday, Nov. 2, when Tennessee hosts Duquesne in Knoxville at 6:30 p.m. ET on SECN+.

DeSean Bishop Is Forcing A Tennessee Debate Nobody Expected

DeSean Bishops breakout against Alabama gave Tennessee exactly the kind of jolt that can change a seasons conversation. The running back piled up 159 rushing yards and two touchdowns in that game, and he has now stacked together a season that looks more impressive by the week. Through six games, Bishop has rushed for 837 yards and 10 touchdowns, production that has forced Vols fans to reconsider just how far his rise might go.

It is still early enough to treat any Heisman talk as a long shot, but Bishop has done enough on the field to make the idea impossible to ignore. For Tennessee, the bigger point is simpler: a player once seen as a supporting piece has become one of the most important reasons the offense keeps moving, and his personal story only adds to the appeal of what could become one of the seasons most unexpected developments. Tennessee Already Has An Early Concern Fans Did Not Want

Tennessees exhibition meeting with Duke brought an unwelcome scare when guard Terrence Hill Jr. appeared to injure his ankle and headed to the locker room. The full extent of the issue is not yet known, but he is unlikely to return to the game, which immediately changes the tone around a matchup that was supposed to be more about early-season tuneups than concern.

Hill is expected to be a major part of the Volunteers rotation this season, so any missed time would matter well beyond one exhibition. Tennessees offense could feel the loss quickly if the injury lingers, and for a team trying to build momentum before the games start counting, this is the kind of setback fans were hoping to avoid. George MacIntyre Is Turning Tennessees QB Situation Into A Real Debate

George MacIntyre is about to get his third straight start for Tennessee, and what began as an injury fill-in now looks like something more significant for the Volunteers. With Faizon Brandon sidelined by a shoulder injury, MacIntyre stepped into the lineup and helped guide Tennessee to three straight SEC wins, giving the offense enough steadiness to keep rolling while the coaches sorted out the depth chart.

Josh Heupel has been quick to praise MacIntyres growth and the efficiency he has shown since taking over, which is part of what makes the quarterback picture so interesting heading into South Carolina. If Tennessee keeps winning with MacIntyre running the offense, the question will shift from who is available to who gives the Volunteers the best chance to keep this run going. [Read more 🡒]
