Justin Gainey Stuns by Making Elite Coaches Watchlist Again

Justin Gainey: A Key Figure on the ABIS Coaches Watchlist

In the world of college basketball, recognition is hard-earned, and Justin Gainey of the University of Tennessee is making waves yet again. Named to the Advancing Beyond in Sports (ABIS) Coaches Watchlist for the second year running, Gainey stands among 36 distinguished coaches in Division I men's basketball. Notably, he is one of only 20 assistant coaches to earn this honor.

The ABIS Watchlist isn't just a nod; it's a spotlight on the top men's and women's coaches across collegiate and professional sports. These coaches are recognized by peers as the best in their field, poised to take their careers to the next level. The list is shared with athletic administrators and executive search firms, highlighting these coaches' contributions as hiring season kicks off.

ABIS, a non-profit organization, is dedicated to exploring how sports can drive equity, build community, and create lasting legacies beyond the game itself.

Gainey, now in his fifth season with the Volunteers, has helped the program achieve an impressive 131-46 (.740) record. Under his guidance, the team has celebrated five consecutive 22-win seasons for the first time in its history. Earlier this year, he was also named to the Silver Waves Media 100 Most Impactful High Major Coaches list.

His influence is particularly evident in Tennessee's defense. Over the past four years, the Volunteers have consistently ranked in the top three nationally in KenPom adjusted defensive efficiency, even claiming the top spot in the 2022-23 season. Currently, they stand at No. 13 in the 2025-26 rankings.

With two decades of experience at the Division I level, including 14 years at Power Five institutions, Gainey's journey is notable. His career path has included stints at NC State, Elon, Appalachian State, Marquette, Santa Clara, and Arizona before joining the Volunteers.

A native of High Point, N.C., Gainey played point guard at NC State from 1996-2000, leaving his mark with impressive stats in steals and assists.
