Joshua Dobbs, the well-traveled quarterback, is once again on the move as the New England Patriots plan to release him after exploring trade options to no avail. This decision comes after Dobbs spent the 2025 season as a backup in New England, where he reunited with former coach Mike Vrabel from their Tennessee Titans days.
Dobbs signed a two-year, $8 million contract with the Patriots, bringing veteran experience behind emerging star Drake Maye. Maye's breakout performance, which saw him as the MVP runner-up and leading the Patriots to a Super Bowl appearance, limited Dobbs' opportunities. In his 44 snaps, Dobbs completed 7 of 10 passes for 65 yards, achieving an 87.5 passer rating.
The Patriots will free up $3.7 million in cap space by releasing Dobbs, leaving them with Drake Maye and Tommy DeVito as their quarterbacks. DeVito recently secured a two-year, $4.4 million extension after serving as the third-string quarterback last season.
For Dobbs, this marks another chapter in a career filled with movement. If he finds a new team, it will be his 12th stint in nine years, having played for nine teams with a 3-12 record across 15 starts. His career stats include a 62.8% completion rate, 3,346 passing yards, 17 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions.
Dobbs, known as "The Passtronaut" for his aerospace engineering background at Tennessee, began his NFL journey with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2017 after a solid college career. His intelligence and adaptability have kept him in the league, and now he looks to bring his experience to yet another team.
