Joshua Dobbs gave Detroit a jolt in its preseason win over Washington, flashing the kind of dual-threat burst that has followed him through his NFL stops.
The Lions beat the Commanders 17-13 on Saturday at Ford Field in Detroit, improving to 1-1 in NFL preseason Week 2 while Washington also moved to 1-1. Dobbs got the start and needed just one first-quarter carry to make his mark, breaking free for a 50-yard touchdown run with 6:38 left in the opening period.
He finished 7-of-12 passing for 74 yards and an interception, while adding 53 rushing yards and the score on two carries. Dobbs was also sacked once for a 15-yard loss.
Detroit also got work from quarterback Luke Altmyer, who completed 9 of 13 passes for 86 yards.
Dobbs signed with the Lions on Aug. 10, and his preseason run has already included another solid showing in Week 1 at Cincinnati. In that game, he went 4-of-8 for 32 passing yards and rushed once for nine yards, helping Detroit get field goals on two of his three series. He was sacked once for five yards.
Before his NFL journey, Dobbs played at Tennessee from 2013-16 and piled up 7,138 passing yards, 53 passing touchdowns, 2,160 rushing yards, 32 rushing touchdowns, 62 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns. Pittsburgh drafted him in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL draft, 135th overall.
He also signed to the Lions' practice squad on Dec. 5, 2022.
