Josh Heupel spent part of Friday night in Knoxville catching up with a familiar last name.
The Tennessee head coach was seen talking with Baylor School freshman quarterback Marshall Manning during the Red Raiders’ game against Knox Catholic at Covenant Health Park. Manning, the son of Tennessee legend Peyton Manning, was in town for Baylor’s 21-7 win. Tennessee running backs coach De’Rail Sims was also in the group, with Sims there to watch five-star commit David Gabriel Georges in action.
WATE’s Sam Rothman posted video of the conversation, and Manning did not appear to play in the game.
Manning’s name has already started to surface around Tennessee circles this fall. Back in August, he made his high school debut on national television when Baylor opened the 2026 season with a 38-20 win over Brentwood Academy.
That night, the true freshman and Baylor backup quarterback saw brief first-half action. He entered midway through the second quarter with Baylor ahead 10-3 and got two snaps.
On his first, Manning rolled to his right and fired an accurate pass for an eight-yard gain. On the next, he handed the ball to David Gabriel Georges.
Manning also saw extensive work two weeks earlier in Baylor’s preseason scrimmage against Buford, but the Brentwood Academy game was his first regular season high school experience. He also wore a white wristband with an orange adidas logo, a nod to his dad’s alma mater.
At 5-foot-11 and 170 pounds, Manning is still unranked by 247Sports because he hasn’t logged enough playing time for an evaluation. Baylor has a habit of producing high-end talent, though, and Manning figures to get his own chances down the road.
Baylor’s win on Friday pushed the Red Raiders to 10-0, and Georges kept rolling with 247 yards and three touchdowns on just 12 carries.

Tennessees Next Depth Chart Already Comes With One Huge Uncertainty
Even before the transfer portal has had its say, Tennessees early roster projection already has one spot that feels far less settled than the rest. The exercise is meant to be a preliminary look at what the Volunteers could line up with next season after likely NFL draft departures, and it offers a useful snapshot of where the depth chart appears sturdy and where the questions still hang over the program.
The broad outline is there on both sides of the ball, but the quarterback picture remains the biggest variable in an otherwise orderly projection. Because the portal has not been factored in, the list is inherently fluid, and that makes the early read more of a starting point than a forecast. For Tennessee, the next few weeks could do a lot to turn speculation into something closer to a real depth chart. [Read more 🡒]
Rick Barnes Sent Tennessee A Message They Couldn't Ignore
After preseason losses, Rick Barnes spent a long stretch with Tennessees basketball team in film, breaking down what winning basketball actually looks like and what the Volunteers were missing. The session lasted three and a half hours, and it was part teaching moment, part reset button for a group still trying to turn early lessons into habits before the games start to count.
Barnes said the response has shown up in practice and in a closed scrimmage against Davidson, where Tennessee looked more connected and more aware of what was happening around them on the floor. He has also made clear that the standard inside the program matters more than any outside ranking, which is the kind of message that tends to land when a coach believes his team is close to understanding what he wants. Tennessee's Five-Star RB Commit Just Gave Vols Fans Another Reason To Dream
The first Covenant Health Classic at Covenant Health Park had plenty of local intrigue, but the Tennessee staff had a very specific reason for being there. Josh Heupel and running backs coach DeRail Sims showed up to watch five-star commit David Gabriel-Georges, and the Baylor School standout delivered the kind of evening that keeps a fan base buzzing well beyond Friday night.
Gabriel-Georges ran for 247 yards and three touchdowns on just 12 carries in Baylors 21-7 win over Knoxville Catholic, helping the Red Raiders finish the regular season unbeaten and add another region championship to the rsum. For Tennessee, it was another reminder that the Vols have a prized back in the fold, and another reason to imagine what he could look like in orange down the line. [Read more 🡒]
