Always be recruiting. Jon Sumrall knows how to turn a program around quickly.
It took him just two years at Tulane to land the Florida job, and another two years at Troy before that. Now, he's focused on building a strong foundation for Florida, starting with the potential flip of Jalen Brewster.
Brewster, a five-star defensive lineman committed to Texas Tech, visited Gainesville recently. According to 247Sports Composite, he's the top player from Texas, the leading defensive lineman in the nation, and the No. 1 overall prospect for the 2027 recruiting cycle. Although committed to Texas Tech since October, Brewster's recruitment is heating up.
He's received 29 official offers, including from powerhouses like Alabama, Georgia, Miami, and, of course, Florida.
Florida is making a strong push for Brewster, with Sumrall showing a different approach than his predecessor, Billy Napier. This aggressive strategy is already paying off, as five-star interior offensive lineman Maxwell Hiller is projected to join the Gators. Securing two five-star recruits for the trenches would certainly put the SEC on notice, as dominating the line of scrimmage is crucial in conference play.
Sumrall is leaving no stone unturned in his pursuit of Brewster. Florida legend Brandon Spikes is also involved, supporting Sumrall's efforts.
Although it's early in Sumrall's tenure, the energy around the program is palpable. This hire feels different for Florida, and it could lead to significant success.
Florida's bold move to pursue the top player in the country speaks volumes. Even if they don't manage to flip Brewster, it demonstrates that the program, under Sumrall, is fearless and ambitious. Despite being new to head coaching at this level, Sumrall's early recruiting efforts suggest he's aiming high and making waves.
