Tennessee football is gearing up for an intriguing quarterback battle this offseason. The situation took an unexpected turn when Joey Aguilar, who started all 13 games last season, sought to extend his college eligibility. Aguilar's attempt to argue that his junior college years shouldn’t count toward his eligibility was denied, closing that chapter and opening the door to the NFL.
Speaking at the NFL Scouting Combine, Aguilar addressed the decision with a sense of acceptance. “Everything happens for a reason,” he reflected.
“I was practicing like I was coming back, but the judge’s decision is final. Now, I’m excited to pursue the next chapter of my life.”
While the decision wasn’t what Aguilar hoped for, it provides clarity and allows him to shift his focus entirely to the NFL. “Waiting around was stressful,” he admitted. “Now, I can concentrate fully on my NFL journey.”
Aguilar's performance last season was a bright spot for Tennessee, with the team finishing 8-5 overall and 4-4 in the SEC. He led the conference with 3,565 passing yards, throwing 24 touchdowns against 10 interceptions, marking a significant offensive resurgence.
Joining Aguilar at the NFL Scouting Combine are six other former Tennessee players: cornerbacks Jermod McCoy and Colton Hood, edge rusher Joshua Josephs, wide receiver Chris Brazzell, tight end Miles Kitselman, and defensive tackle Bryson Eason. Their presence underscores the Vols’ talent pipeline as they look toward professional careers.
