The Dallas Cowboys are moving on from Joe Milton III, a decision that came down Monday afternoon and caught plenty of attention around the league. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Dallas is releasing the quarterback, which means offseason addition Sam Howell won the backup job and will open the season as Dak Prescott’s No. 2.
It’s a pretty stunning turn for Milton, especially given the kind of arm talent and upside he brings. But Dallas clearly decided it wasn’t going to keep waiting for the long-term payoff and viewed Howell as the safer choice for the future.
Milton had put together a strong start to the preseason. In the Cowboys’ first two games, he threw for 286 yards and three touchdowns while completing 21 of 28 passes.
The finish wasn’t nearly as sharp, though. In Friday’s preseason finale against the Saints, he managed just 92 yards on 8-of-15 passing, and that dip appears to have been enough to push Dallas toward another roster move, including the addition of another running back.
The quarterback’s path to Dallas has already been a winding one. He was drafted by the New England Patriots, spent one season in Foxborough, and was then traded to the Cowboys before the 2025 season. Last year, he served as Prescott’s backup and saw limited action, appearing in four games and totaling 183 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions on 15-of-24 passing.
Even with the release, Milton probably won’t be available for long. Teams around the league are dealing with shaky quarterback situations, and his physical tools should make him attractive once he hits the waiver wire. That makes this feel less like the end of the road and more like a matter of timing.
For the preseason, Milton finished with 392 passing yards and four touchdowns while completing 67.4% of his throws.
He’s also one of several notable Tennessee players to be waived over the past 48 hours, along with quarterback Joey Aguilar of the Jacksonville Jaguars, quarterback Hendon Hooker of the Tennessee Titans, and wide receiver Jalin Hyatt of the New York Giants.

Josh Heupels offense has always carried his fingerprints, and that remains true heading into his sixth season in Knoxville. The Tennessee coach has already guided the Volunteers to two 10-win regular seasons and a College Football Playoff appearance, while continuing to stay heavily involved in the playcalling alongside offensive coordinator Joey Halzle.
Now that familiarity may matter even more for the Vols next quarterback. True freshman Faizon Brandon won the starting job over George MacIntyre for the 2026 season, giving Tennessee a young passer stepping into a system Heupel knows as well as anyone. DeSean Bishop is back in the spotlight for Tennessee after delivering a 1,000-yard season with 16 touchdowns last year, yet the preseason recognition did not quite match the production. He returns as the Volunteers lead running back heading into a backfield that also includes three sophomore backups, giving Tennessee a young rotation to sort through before the games start counting.
The omission from the Doak Walker Award preseason watch list adds a little edge to Bishops fall, even if it does not change what he has already done for the program.
