Tennessee football has bolstered its backfield by adding a promising young talent through the transfer portal. Javin Gordon, who showcased his skills during his freshman year at Tulane, has chosen to join the Vols, aiming to make his mark behind DeSean Bishop in 2026.
Gordon's decision to don the orange and white was influenced by several key factors, with a significant one being his connection with UT running backs coach De’Rails Sims. This relationship dates back to Gordon's high school days, where Sims first recognized his potential. It's this bond that laid the groundwork for his move to Tennessee.
Beyond the coaching connection, Gordon was drawn to the Vols by the proximity to his hometown of Toccoa, Georgia, and the fervent support of the Tennessee fan base. "Going back to Coach Sims, the relationship we built in high school," Gordon shared.
"Tennessee is a lot closer to home. Kind of somewhere I wanted to be.
Just like I said, the fan base. Everybody here made me feel wanted."
Gordon made a significant impact at Tulane, scoring three touchdowns in a standout game last season and participating in all 14 contests, including a playoff bout against Ole Miss. Starting in six of those games, he earned a solid PFF grade of 72.7, setting high expectations as he transitions to Tennessee for his sophomore year.
Coach Sims is optimistic about Gordon's potential, emphasizing his early contributions at Tulane. "He’s a guy that goes out there and plays early as a freshman, a true freshman in college, on a playoff caliber team," Sims noted.
"He was productive from that standpoint, but you see a guy that has a really high ceiling that is not maxed out. You saw the pass-catching ability out of the backfield, the pass protection ability, the running the football ability, as well."
As Tennessee progresses through spring practice, all eyes are on the upcoming Orange & White Game on April 11, 2026, at 2 p.m. ET. Fans will be eager to see how Gordon integrates into the Vols' dynamic offense and what he brings to the table in the upcoming season.
