Janiah Barker Absent as Lady Vols Head to Oklahoma Game

Despite her standout performance, Janiah Barker's absence against Oklahoma raises questions about program expectations and the Lady Vols' future prospects.

Tennessee Lady Vols are facing a significant challenge as they hit the road to take on No. 11 Oklahoma without one of their standout players, Janiah Barker. Barker, who was sidelined due to not meeting program expectations, has been a key contributor to the team’s success this season.

Barker's stats speak volumes: she's been averaging 14.4 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game while shooting an impressive 46.9% from the field and 36.6% from beyond the arc. Her impact on the court is undeniable, having started in 18 of the 24 games she’s played, with an average of 24.1 minutes per game.

In her last outing against Texas A&M, Barker delivered a stellar performance, racking up 29 points, 10 rebounds, an assist, two steals, and two blocks. Despite her efforts, the Lady Vols fell short, losing 82-74 at home.

As the Lady Vols face off against Oklahoma, they’ve managed to edge ahead with a 22-20 lead after the first quarter. Head coach Kim Caldwell emphasized the need for strong defensive play against Oklahoma’s fast-paced offense.

“They share the ball well and can hit from the 3-point line. Our focus has to be on guarding both the perimeter and the post, especially in transition,” Caldwell noted.

With limited preparation time, the team is relying on strategic film sessions and practice to gear up for the early game.

Looking ahead, Tennessee's schedule doesn't get any easier. They’ll face No.

7 LSU on the road and then return home to take on No. 5 Vanderbilt.

These matchups are crucial as the Lady Vols aim to bolster their resume before the SEC Tournament, a pivotal moment for securing a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
