Estrella has quickly become a standout figure in the 2026 NCAA tournament, thanks to his unforgettable reaction to DeWayne Brown’s electrifying dunk against Miami (OH). Estrella's energy and signature "W" celebration have made him a fan favorite among Vol supporters since his arrival on campus.
But there's more to Tennessee's towering star than meets the eye, a side that only those closest to him, like his parents Allie and Matt, truly understand.
"Proud doesn’t begin to describe it," Matt shared, highlighting the resilience Estrella has shown. "How he tackles challenges, like being sidelined for a season, both mentally and physically," added Allie, who herself played at Boston College and was a former Ms. Basketball in Maine.
While Vol Nation sees a joyful and spirited player, his family witnesses the moments of struggle. Last season, after a promising start, Estrella was benched after just three games due to a foot injury.
"Despite the setbacks, he keeps that charm alive," Allie noted. "He's someone we’re incredibly proud of, both as an athlete and as a person."
In Friday’s game against Miami, Estrella made a strong return, scoring 14 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in his first NCAA tournament appearance since the 2024 Elite Eight. Back then, he faced off against 7′3″ Zach Edey, logging significant minutes.
"I nearly had a heart attack," Allie recalled. "Seeing my kid up against Zach...
I thought, ‘he’s going to flick J.P. away!’ but he held his own."
That day in Detroit, Estrella proved his mettle as a Division I athlete, earning respect for his performance and character both on and off the court.
"We couldn’t be prouder of him. We really couldn’t."
