George MacIntyre Just Changed Tennessees Quarterback Conversation

After breaking a decades-long streak with a win in Fayetteville, George MacIntyre and DeSean Bishop share their insights and reflections on Tennessee's hard-fought victory.

George MacIntyre came out of Tennessee’s tight win over Arkansas with plenty to say, and so did DeSean Bishop. Between MacIntyre’s first start and Bishop’s late-game burst, the Vols found just enough offense to survive a game that turned in their favor late.

MacIntyre said he was “super excited to have my first start today” and felt Tennessee moved the ball well overall. Even so, he made it clear there was still work to do before next week.

“I think overall, we did a good job on offense moving the ball. I think there's things I need to clean up, things the team needs to clean up, heading into a big week next week.”

The quarterback also explained how he handled the moment, saying he stayed calm rather than rattled.

“I would say pretty even-keeled. At the end of the day, it's just football. Obviously super excited and grateful to be out there today, but I would say more locked in than nervous.”

One of the biggest plays of the day came when MacIntyre connected with Braylon after what he described as a scramble-drill type of sequence. He said he trusted his guy and the play swung momentum.

“Yeah, I think that play was huge. Could definitely feel the momentum shifting.

Thought Braylon did a good job, you know, staying alive. Kind of got into like almost like a scramble drill situation, buying a little time and I trusted my guy and he made a play for me.”

MacIntyre also said he was trying to keep Tennessee’s offense pointed in the right direction during the game’s final stretch, especially on the last drive when the Vols needed to run clock and finish the job.

“Yeah, I was just saying guys this is our game. This is our time to go take it.

Really just trying to pump up the O line, the run game, especially on that last drive, you know, when we needed a couple first downs to kill some time, stuff like that. I thought DaSaahn Brame responded really well.

Had obviously the big play down the sideline and then ran the ball in for a little rushing touchdown. So yeah, that was the message.”

For MacIntyre, the work during the week has mattered just as much as what happened on Saturday. He said getting starter reps has helped him settle in.

“I think I always prepare like a starter even at the beginning of the season, but just getting the starting reps in practice is big. Getting the chemistry out your guys, you know, with a new install every week.

Kind of just really getting to rep it all week long. It makes me feel a lot more confident.”

Bishop’s night was defined by patience and then one decisive burst. He said he felt good about the play that helped seal the game and knew exactly what he wanted to do when the crease opened.

“I think it sealed the game to be honest. I was just being patient and I felt really good about the play.

You know, I love running the gaps and when I saw the whole crease, I hit it. You know, had to make one guy miss and the rest is history.”

Bishop said the touchdown run came after he had settled into the game and waited for his chance. He also pointed to his faith and to the belief he felt from teammates along the way.

“Keep it real. I mean, I don't think it was anything they was doing.

I mean, just had to settle into the game. Like I said, man, Lord works in mysterious ways.

You know, you never know when the opportunity may come and I stay patient. I was talking to them again and my teammates were telling me that your time's coming.

You know, he also speaks to us through people. And believe it or not when my opportunity came, it happened to be with like 4 minutes left in the fourth quarter, you know.

So, made the most out of every opportunity I get to touch the ball and all praise to him allow me to do what I do.”

MacIntyre praised Bishop’s finish, saying the big play changed everything late.

“I think that play was huge. Could definitely feel the momentum shifting.”

He also said he saw a quarterback who stayed composed through the ups and downs.

“Just how relaxed he looked. I mean, like he said, prepare like he's a starter all the time.

I give him a hard time. He's my locker room mate and he can vouch for that.

But man, a guy out there is a competitor, you know, always looking to improve his game, always looking to get better. You know, obviously some having some mistakes, but didn't faze him at all.

You know, just kept playing and kept doing what he could to put us in the best positions to come out on top and really proud of what he's put on today.”

Bishop also said MacIntyre’s rise has been especially meaningful because he is a local kid.

“I say with George is definitely special cuz he's a local kid. You know, I always love seeing the local kids do well, especially at the university and just to go to show, man, obviously didn't want didn't have the start he wanted.

You know, didn't win the job and obviously, you know, now he's playing now and is playing like a starter, you know. So, I tell him all the time, man, you never know when your opportunity may come and he's definitely shining right now.

Going to need him, going to need him next week, especially for another big one. So, looking forward to what he has to bring for the rest of the season.”

For MacIntyre, the afternoon was about staying ready and making the most of the moment when it finally arrived.

“I think it sealed the game to be honest.”

And in the end, Tennessee got exactly that: a late push, a clean finish, and enough from both MacIntyre and Bishop to leave Fayetteville with a win.

Tennessee Escaped Arkansas But A Bigger Problem Just Followed Them Home

Tennessee finally got back in the win column with a 24-17 escape at Arkansas, and DeSean Bishops late touchdown gave the Volunteers the kind of finish they desperately needed after a rough stretch. Even so, the trip did not feel like a clean reset. The result ended the losing streak, but it also left plenty of questions about how well Tennessee actually played, especially for a team trying to steady itself before the next run of games.

George MacIntyres performance is part of that conversation, as are the Volunteers repeated issues in late first-half situations and the coaching choices that kept surfacing throughout the game. A win can calm the noise for a day, but Tennessee still has to prove this was more than a narrow escape if it wants the rest of the season to look any better than the last few weeks have. Tennessee's Alabama Quarterback Debate Just Got A Lot More Real

George MacIntyres first career start gave Tennessee plenty to sort through after a win at Arkansas, where he went 18-of-29 for 247 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. The result mattered beyond the box score, too, because it snapped a 25-year losing streak at that venue and kept the Volunteers moving forward at a moment when the quarterback job is suddenly one of the biggest storyline on the roster.

All signs now point to MacIntyre getting the nod against Alabama, a matchup that can change the tone of a season in a hurry. The intrigue for Tennessee is whether the staff sticks with the freshman through the growing pains or has a quicker hook available if things go sideways, with Faizon Brandon waiting as the option to reclaim the spot if needed. Arkansas Coach Defends Late Decision After Tennessee Escapes Fayetteville

Arkansas 24-17 loss to Tennessee in Fayetteville left plenty to sort through after the final whistle, and Ryan Silverfield went straight to the decisions that shaped the finish. The Arkansas coach said the defense held up well enough to keep the game within reach, while the offense never quite found the efficiency it needed to take advantage of the opportunities that were there.

Silverfield also spent time explaining his choice to punt late instead of gambling on fourth down, a call that naturally drew attention in a one-score game against a ranked SEC opponent. He laid out his reasoning after the game and pointed toward the same broader theme running through the loss: Arkansas had chances, but not enough consistency, and there were still multiple areas that needed to be cleaned up moving forward.
