Nico Iamaleava’s first season at UCLA may already be over.
CBS reported that the former Tennessee quarterback is expected to miss the rest of the year after suffering a knee injury in UCLA’s win over Oregon on Saturday. The setback lands hard for both Iamaleava and a Bruins team that has surged into the national picture under Bob Chesney in his first season at the helm.
UCLA is 5-0 overall and 3-0 in Big Ten play, with the Oregon upset helping push the Bruins up to No. 12 in the latest AP Poll. Iamaleava was a central reason for that turnaround, even with his uneven play through the opening stretch of the season.
Before the injury, he had completed 62.1% of his passes for 982 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions. He also added 144 rushing yards and a score.
That production was enough to get the attention of NFL evaluators. Matt Zenitz reported that some front offices had started viewing Iamaleava as a potential top-three-round draft pick.

An unfortunate development for No. 12 UCLA and for Iamaleava, who had been brought up by multiple NFL front office staffers recently as an ascending top three round draft prospect.

His 2026 numbers came after a productive 2025 season at UCLA, when he completed 64.4% of his passes for 1,928 yards, 13 touchdowns and seven interceptions. That was the year after he transferred out of Tennessee in the spring window.
The move set off a quarterback change in Knoxville. Tennessee replaced Iamaleava by bringing in UCLA quarterback Joey Aguilar, and Aguilar responded with 3,565 passing yards, 24 touchdowns and 10 interceptions for the Vols.
Iamaleava had been Tennessee’s full-time starter during the 2024 College Football Playoff run before departing. That season, he threw for 2,616 yards, 19 touchdowns and five interceptions. Tennessee’s offense had its struggles, but the Vols still got a big year from Dylan Sampson and fielded one of the best defenses in the country.
Iamaleava originally arrived at Tennessee in 2023 as a five-star freshman. He spent the regular season behind Joe Milton III before making his first career start in a 35-0 Citrus Bowl win over Iowa.
He now has one year of college eligibility left if he decides to return.

Tennessee Climbs Again But One Vols Question Still Hangs Over Alabama
Tennessee left Fayetteville with a 24-17 road win over Arkansas and a fresh bump in the AP Poll, climbing one spot to No. 14 as the Vols settle in as the SECs No. 6 team. It was also a notable day for sophomore quarterback George MacIntyre, who made his first start and gave Tennessee a mixed outing with 247 passing yards, one touchdown, two interceptions and a lost fumble in a game that still ended in a conference win.
Josh Heupel did not use the postgame spotlight to lock in the quarterback situation beyond this week, which keeps one of Tennessees biggest questions alive as Alabama comes to Neyland Stadium next. The Vols have plenty to feel good about after responding on the road, but the margin for error tightens quickly now, and the quarterback decision is one more layer to sort out before a marquee SEC showdown. Heupel Shares Emotional William Inge Update Tennessee Fans Needed
William Inge has been away from Tennessees day-to-day football work since Sept. 25, when the Volunteers linebackers coach was hospitalized because of a personal medical issue. It has been a difficult stretch for a staff that has had to keep moving through the season without one of its newer assistants, since Inge arrived in 2024 after previously coaching at Washington.
Josh Heupel offered a reassuring update on Inges condition, saying he is recovering well and should be released from the hospital around the middle of next week before beginning rehabilitation. For Tennessee, the news brings some needed relief after a quiet, worrying absence, and it gives the program a clearer sense of what comes next for a coach whose presence has been missed on the sideline and in the meeting room. Tennessee Heads Into Alabama Week With Something To Prove At Home
Tennessee is heading into one of the SECs biggest stage games with Alabama coming to Knoxville for a 3:30 p.m. ET kickoff on ABC, and the matchup already has the feel of a measuring-stick afternoon. FanDuel lists the Crimson Tide as 6.5-point favorites, with the over/under set at 54.5, which only adds to the sense that the Vols will need to make a statement at home if they want to change the conversation around the matchup.
Josh Heupel spent part of last week trying to keep his team grounded, denying Tennessee was peeking ahead to Alabama during the win over Arkansas. Now comes the part that matters most for Tennessees season, and for a fan base that knows how much this rivalry can swing on one game. The Vols will get their chance in front of their own crowd, with plenty still to prove when the Tide arrive. [Read more 🡒]
