Former Tennessee defensive back Kaleb Beasley is already making noise at Louisville, and his latest performance turned into national recognition.
Beasley was a major factor in the Cardinals’ 41-31 win over SMU on Saturday, stuffing the stat sheet with 10 tackles, including four solo stops and half a tackle for loss. He also grabbed two interceptions, the kind of game-changing plays that can flip a matchup in a hurry.
That showing earned him the Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week award. It was the first time since Lamar Jackson won it in 2016 that a Louisville player had taken home the national player of the week honor.
Beasley also picked up ACC Defensive Back of the Week honors. Through three games, he has 22 tackles and two interceptions for the 2-1 Cardinals, who are No. 16 in this week’s AP Poll.
His breakout moment comes after a move out of Tennessee, where roster changes on defense helped open the door for departures. Beasley was one of the players who left, transferring to Louisville after spending last season as a backup safety for the Vols.
He played in 11 games on defense for Tennessee last season, all in a reserve role. He was usually the first safety off the bench behind Edrees Farooq and Andre Turrentine.
Farooq was expected to step back into a starting job this season, but a preseason injury changed that picture. Tennessee has since leaned on transfers TJ Metcalf and Dejuan Lane, both of whom have played well in the first three games.
Beasley’s final season at Tennessee, in 2025, included 24 tackles and a fumble-recovery touchdown. He earned a PFF grade of 61.0. Before that, he saw action in five games as a freshman, including the College Football Playoff loss to Ohio State, and finished that year with four tackles.
A Nashville native, Beasley played at Lipscomb Academy and was teammates there with current UT linebacker Edwin Spillman. Coming out of high school, he was a four-star recruit and a top-10 player in Tennessee across all major recruiting services. On3 ranked him as high as the No. 1 player in the state and the No. 125 prospect in the class.
