Amari Evans isn’t shying away from the reunion with Tennessee. In fact, the former Vols guard made it clear he would have preferred a return trip to Knoxville when Texas meets his old team this season.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Evans said he wished the matchup was in Knoxville so he could get back to the Food City Center “one last time.”

That game is set for Saturday, Feb. 27, when Tennessee travels to Austin to face the Longhorns. There’s also a chance the two teams could see each other again in the SEC Tournament the following month.
Evans ended up at Texas after leaving Tennessee through the transfer portal this offseason. He was part of a massive Longhorns portal haul, and his move set up at least one meeting with the program he just left.
His departure from Tennessee came late in the process. Evans was the seventh Vol to hit the portal, coming after Cade Phillips, Clarence Massamba, J.P.
Estrella, Bishop Boswell, Troy Henderson, and Jaylen Carey. Henderson eventually returned to Tennessee.
During his lone season in Knoxville, Evans carved out a bigger role as the year went on. He averaged 4.1 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 1.0 steals per game overall, while bumping those numbers to 5.2 points and 3.5 rebounds in SEC play. His value showed up most on the defensive end, where his perimeter work helped him earn minutes in Rick Barnes’ rotation.
He played 35 games and averaged 14.4 minutes per contest. Late in the regular season, with Tennessee freshman star Nate Ament sidelined by injury before the SEC Tournament, Evans picked up two starts.
His best outing came in the regular-season finale against Vanderbilt, when he scored 24 points. That was one of two double-digit SEC scoring games for Evans, with the other coming in the conference opener against Arkansas, where he finished with 16 points.
Tennessee also already has one recent reference point against Sean Miller’s Texas program. During Evans’ freshman season in Knoxville, the Vols faced the Longhorns once, and Evans logged 23 minutes in the win while scoring four points on 1-of-3 shooting and 2-of-2 from the line.
The transfer market made both schools look strong this offseason. ESPN’s Jeff Borzello ranked Tennessee’s portal class No. 1 in the country, with Texas right behind at No.

Tennessee is trying to make the first trip into Neyland Stadium feel a little smoother for Saturdays game against Kennesaw State, doubling the number of metal detectors to 65 in an effort to speed up fan entry. The school is also adding new detector locations and providing updated instructions for fans and students, part of a broader game-day push as the stadium continues to evolve around them.
