Former Ohio State Roommates Face Off In Elite Eight

Former roommates turned rivals, Felix Okpara and Roddy Gayle, reunite on the court as Tennessee and Michigan clash in the Elite Eight.

In the heart of Chicago, Michigan's Roddy Gayle had just wrapped up a stellar performance, leading the Wolverines to a 90-77 victory over Alabama in the Sweet 16. As the dust settled, a familiar face emerged-Tennessee's big man, Felix Okpara.

The two shared a history, having been roommates and teammates at Ohio State back in 2022. Now, they’re set to face off on Sunday, with a coveted spot in the Final Four on the line.

"When I first met him, his English was terrible," Gayle chuckled, reminiscing about his old friend. "But he was such a fun guy.

We shared a bond that’s rare. We were roommates, shared meals, and supported each other.

That connection will always be there."

Fast forward four years, and both players have carved out impressive paths. That 2023 recruiting class at Ohio State was something special.

Bruce Thornton became the Buckeyes' all-time leading scorer, while Brice Sensabaugh took his talents to the NBA with the Utah Jazz. Meanwhile, Gayle and Okpara have become key players for Michigan and Tennessee, respectively.

"Man, that's my guy," Okpara shared with CBS Sports. "We still keep in touch, and I’m thrilled for his success.

I know he feels the same for me. Playing against him again is going to be exciting."

Their journey hasn't been without challenges. Ohio State had its struggles, including a tough freshman year where they lost 14 of 15 games.

Coach Chris Holtmann was let go during their sophomore season, and decisions had to be made. Thornton stayed, but Gayle and Okpara chose new paths.

"We didn’t want to leave," Okpara admitted. "But we had to make decisions that would change our lives. We both found the right fit."

And it shows. Gayle, now dubbed "March Roddy" by his Michigan teammates, dropped 16 points against Alabama, showing his knack for stepping up in big moments. Last year, he had similar heroics, helping Michigan advance in the NCAA Tournament.

Okpara, on the other hand, has become a defensive powerhouse in the SEC. His journey from Nigeria in 2018 to now has been marked by growth, both on and off the court. His rim protection is a cornerstone of Tennessee's defense, making them a formidable opponent for Michigan.

As Gayle gears up for Sunday’s clash, he knows he’ll have to navigate around Okpara's defensive prowess. "It’s surreal," Gayle reflected.

"Two guys from Ohio State, now competing in the Elite Eight on different teams. It’s going to be a fun matchup, playing against someone I grew up with."

This showdown is more than just a game; it’s a testament to their resilience and growth, setting the stage for what promises to be an unforgettable encounter.
