Tennessee freshman quarterback Faizon Brandon has landed on the preseason watch list for the ninth annual Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award, the Maxwell Football Club announced Wednesday.
Brandon is one of 37 FBS players on the list for the award, which goes to the top freshman in college football. The field will narrow to 14 semifinalists on Wednesday, Nov. 4, before five finalists are announced on Saturday, Dec.
- The winner is set to be revealed Monday, Dec. 28, and the award will be presented at the 90th Maxwell Awards ceremony on March 13, 2027, in Atlanta.
The honor comes after Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel said Monday that Brandon will open the 2026 season as the Vols’ starting quarterback. Brandon arrived on campus in January 2026, took part in spring practice and made major strides in strength and speed during the team’s offseason work before winning the job in preseason camp.
A consensus top-five quarterback and five-star prospect by 247Sports and ESPN, Brandon was ranked No. 2 nationally by 247Sports and No. 9 by ESPN. The Greensboro, North Carolina, native was also ranked the No. 4 overall recruit by Rivals and was the top prospect in North Carolina by 247Sports and ESPN.
Brandon’s prep résumé at Grimsley High School was loaded. He went 35-1 as a starter and helped the program win back-to-back state championships. Over his career, he completed more than 72 percent of his passes for 6,374 yards and 79 touchdowns, while also rushing for 1,261 yards and 21 scores.
His senior year included 66 completions on 101 attempts for 1,116 yards and 11 touchdowns with one interception, plus 233 rushing yards and three touchdowns. As a junior, he led Grimsley to a perfect 16-0 record and the 2024 Class 4A state championship, throwing for 2,814 yards and 35 touchdowns with just two interceptions while completing 77.1 percent of his passes.
Brandon was named the 2024 Gatorade and MaxPreps Player of the Year in North Carolina, earned a spot as a 2026 Navy All-American, stood out at the 2025 Elite 11 Finals in California and was selected as an Academic All-American in May 2025.
Brandon is one of several Tennessee players showing up on preseason honor lists. The Vols’ preseason recognition also includes Josh Heupel on the Dodd Trophy Watch List, DeSean Bishop on the Walter Camp Player of the Year Watch List and Maxwell Award Watch List, and a long list of players earning national and SEC attention.

Other Vols on preseason lists include Wendell Moe Jr., who made the Lombardi Award and Outland Trophy watch lists and was named to multiple All-America and All-SEC teams; David Sanders Jr.; Jesse Perry; Daevin Hobbs; Xavier Gilliam; Donovan Haslam; Kayin Lee; TJ Metcalf; Qua Moss; P Jackson Ross; Shamurad Umarov; and Jeremiah Telander, all of whom were also noted in Tennessee’s preseason honors release.
